Well here I go. Bought the first part off E-Bay, a CB Module. If any one has done this feel free to offer suggestions.
I know I need the console with the plug-in, one or two wiring harnesses, and a headset. The Harley parts catalog said some of the parts are not available for a Road Glide Custom but the parts guy put together a list for me. $999.00 just for the parts from Harley. He said it would work. Planning on doing the install myself.
Moving very slowly along here. Been working extra hours while some of the crew headed south for February.
Took the left switch housing off and apart. Clutch lever comes off with it. Pictures aren't very good but if you see the gold screw, that screw goes in the hole toward the center on the new switch set-up. If you look closely you'll see that the plate has a shoulder and one side is higher then the side the screw came out of. Which of course made the screw about 1/64th of an inch too short to reach the threads. (Insert Cursing Here).
Will have to go to hardware store if I get the time.
PTT Switch
Gold Screw and new location
Took one to remember where the wire tie goes
I need to review Stangs new stereo thread to get some ideas about covering for the PTT wires. I'm going to just run them along the existing wiring for now. Hope to get some new bars sometime and just put everything internal.
Bought a screw for the inside of the switch housing. Ordered some small waterproof tubing to run the wires with.
#2 son jammed my Explorer driver's seat all the way forward and now it won't move. That's what I'll be working on when I get off work. I looked like Shaq driving a VW Bug all the way to work. Knees were jammed in the dash, I had the backrest all the way back and had to put the seat all the way up.
Hope to finish up the switch housing if I can fix the car first. (Insert more curse words)
Put the bottom plate (new screw) and mid plate in the bottom handlebar switch housing. There is definitely only one way the wires route through these plates.Took a while to get the combination right.
Put the CB module in, 3 minute job.
Connected the ultra wiring harness to the radio. Lot of wires, no wonder it cost over $100.
I decided to take out the speedo and tach and send them to LED GaugeMods.com to get the colors changed. Paid them and am awaiting shipping instructions.
I use the J&M Portable CB Handlebar Mounted (CB2003 Kit) that also allows an IPOD or Radio plugged in using a simple stereo plug. The Antenna cable is routed under the tank to the license plate using a lic. plate mount. But, I'm thinking of making a mount using seat bolt or a fender mount bolt.
I was going to go with that CB on my Road King before I went crazy and traded it for a Road Glide. I think what you did is definitely the way to go price and convenience wise. If this turns out not to work that's what I'm going for.
I was just going to take some tools to the garage but it was above frozen today. So I decided to disconnect the fuel line and console from the tank. The fuel line took a lot of tries to get it to come loose. The console was a snap. Took the back bolt off the tank and stopped there. This is to be able to run the CB antenna cable to the back.
Got my wire tubing in the mail. Good service. $16.
Things are going about as expected for a Wyandotte County boy. I got the left switch housing back on. The only advice I can give is there seems to be only one way those wires can be routed inside the housing without squashing them. I can't tell you how they go just that they won't go any other way. You are on your own to figure it out. The book shows some fairly good pictures but not all the wires.
I bravely turned on the ignition and radio with no smoke or fire.
Only thing I noticed was that when I pushed the radio volume switch button to louder it got quieter, and visa versa. I thought I had put the switch itself in upside down. But that's the only way for it to go and still have the button fit properly. ??? I figured no biggy I'd get used to it. I am thinking about switching the two wires in the connector in the fairing, but not right now.
On to the speaker switch. I thought it was a power switch when I was buying stuff off E-Bay so I thought I'd just use the ACC switch. Definitely not enough research on this and it cost me $70 after a discount coupon.
I had to take the ignition switch off in order to get the "Fairing Nacelle" apart to install that one switch. I like to never got the ignition switch back in. Again only advice is to follow the book and it may be a good idea to have that special tool. I didn't, but I got it to fall in ok. I probably need to search this forum for tips on this if I do it again.
Pic #1 is of the WyCo method for connecting Tyco connectors when you don't have the housing. I can't find the right plug to go in the receptacle that "was" attached to the bike wiring for the Speaker Switch to go in. What I have works but I'll probably buy a Deutsch or Molex connector (both sides) to replace the Tyco. Apparently Tyco is now "TE" and I can't find the 070 connector. Probably only $50 from the dealer. I'll fix it right some day.
Pic #2 is of the handlebar CB switch wires after running them to the fairing. I think only 2 need to be connected as the book shows that the other 2 splice into existing wires before the connector. I have them taped over so they wouldn't pull back through the insulation. Proud of myself on that one.
Any way feeling better about progress. Still waiting on antenna from dealer.
NOTE: I was going to send Speedo and Tach to LEDgaugemods.com but he refunded my money and said he was busy with school right now. Dangit! There are others but more expensive and it kind of took the wind out of me buying the antenna and speaker switch from the dealer.
The St. Patrick's day ride turned out to be Saturday instead of Sunday. I pulled an all nighter and put the bike back together. The last picture you see is what the bike looked like at 10 PM Friday. I had it ready to go at 9 AM Saturday.
It took so long because I still had some technical stuff to do.
I still suck at soldering.
Getting the right positions for wires in the fairing so it will fit back on is pretty tough.
The microphone/headphone wire would not reach where it is supposed to so after several tries I Jimmy Rigged it for later improvement.
And so on.
Any way the really good news is it works.!! I can't believe it. Works exactly as it is supposed to.
The real amazing thing is that everything that was working before still works too.
Still have some WY Co engineered stuff to clean up but looks like I'm done with technical stuff.
Found out on the ride that I positioned the left controls way low and when I first went to hit the turn signal I honked the horn. LOL. I'll fix that this AM before riding again.
Good to be back in the saddle.
"More close up pic's when you get the chance please"
Ha. You caught me.
It wasn't real clean, the plug for the headphones is velcroed to the front of the console, and I think I put the front turn signals on the wrong sides. The book says they're marked but you have to read the book before you do the work.
A final list of part numbers used would be great.
Just show how it all went together . It'll help out the next guy who starts this same project . :thumb
Ya know it's really easy to read the book first. :fitz
Had the fairing off today and extended the headset wiring so now the connection is below the left front of the seat. I decided the proper console wasn't very good looking so I'm keeping the FLTRX console and mounting the outlet as mentioned.
I took some pictures today but they're not very good. I need to work on arrows and such so what you see will make sense.
Got it back together and all still works. I washed the bike and feel pretty good that everything still working.
The $70 Speaker switch is pretty cool. It's got 3 positions.
1- Cuts out the headset(s) and only plays through the speakers. Both CB and Radio.
2- Plays radio through the speakers and the CB through the headset
3- Plays both radio and CB through the headset and shuts off speakers.
CB overrides radio when receiving a call or transmitting
I never have passengers so no. The harness I bought has connections for XM Radio, Back left and right speakers, and Passenger Headset. In addition to the CB and Rider/Sidecar connections.
Will have to wait a while to do any more as I'm leaving for Arizona Wednesday.
Will check back on this when I get back in a week or so. I have plenty of cleanup to do so I'll try to get better pictures and put important stuff in order, for an overall post.
