Little by little I'm getting this 03 Heritage up to speed . When I bought bike I didn't notice that the windshield on bike was way to short for me so I bought a 21 inch Rifle windshield this Heritage has a freight train nacelle head light so the cut out has to be bigger which Rifle took into consideration and made proper adjustments .
I put new windshield on to detachable docking system and all is well except the bottom of windshield is touching top of nacelle slightly .
My question is will loosening nuts and bolts on windshield bracket and pulling shield up slightly and retighten let me get that little bit of clearance I need are is it a waist of time because loosening want give me any slack .
My docking bushings are worn pretty bad so I will replace them . Will this give me that slack I'm looking for . What would you do ? Either way if I ride like it is I'll have a scuff on my chrome nacelle and I can't have that can I .
I know I can just try and see what happens but thought someone might have encountered this problem . Thanks
If it can't be moved enough, maybe split a piece of small diameter tubing and slip it over the edge that touches your nacelle? nacelle, strange word isn't it?
I wouldn't run it like that for fear for scuffing the Nacelle even a little bit. Just throw some wrenches on it and try to see if you have already given yourself the fix to the problem. If it can't be adjusted out, take it to a local plastics shop and have them deepen the cut-out with using the proper procedure and you're done. Unless Rifle will take it back and modify it for you, but I'm sure you'll be dealing with shipping costs then.
ANYTHING touching chrome or paint on a Harley will eventually leave a rub mark from the vibration (including rubber). I would not use this windshield before the problem is resolved. Plastic is cheaper and easier to alter than chrome.
You may be able to get the clearance you need by taking a drill or rat tail file and elongating the bolt holes downward. The bracket straps are wide enough to cover a slightly oversized hole. If it were me, though, I would probably send it back and have the manufacturer deal with it. You still have your original to use in the meantime. They really should pay shipping both ways. JMHO.
I called Rifle and talked to Dennis and he told me to leave windshield attached loosen screws and then try and lift to get clearance between light and windshield then tighten . So that was my plan but before I got around to loosening nuts and bolts about 30 minutes Dennis calls and says it's the wrong windshield I don't see where we cut a 21 inch for a freight train nacelle . So we messed up and we will send you the right windshield to you with a return paid label to send the wrong windshield back . So sorry for our mistake . I can't tell you how it impressed me that Rifle and Dennis took ownership of my problem and came up with a fix . Not many companies or people out there like this anymore . I could tell when I was talking to Dennis the first time he couldn't figure out why it was such a close fit . Anyway thanks Rifle for your help and honesty to admit you messed up !
With that nacelle you probably should have purchased a windshield for a Road King. No biggie. Get a sanding drum attachment for your drill and open up the hole a bit.
Have a friend that had a similar problem but on a different model, unfortunately for him it was his problem and only his problem cause he bought from a guy months ago and only recently tried to use the thing. He messed around with it and ended up cutting or filing, sanding what ever he did and is using the dam thing.
Think he removed about a 1/8 inch
