I probably know the answer before asking, but here goes. Has anyone used the cigarette lighter plug as a power port for cell phone chargers? (actually I read the owner's manual and it obviously suggests not to), but I figure the charger would tax the system less than the lighter.
I use it on my 09 RKC for ipod, gps cell no problems. After making the quick connect under the seat I ran it into my right side saddlebag cannot even see it.
alright I know these are old posting but I read thru them all and here is my problem. I plugged my GPS in my cigarette lighter on a 2005 Classic and it popped the fuse. I tried the ipod and it also popped the fuse. The dealer wants HD to trouble shoot it and I can't see it. So here is my idea but I want feed back first. I was thinking of getting the powerlet that mounts on the handle bars and run the wires under the tank and then connect right to the battery with a fuse in it just to make sure....Here is also something others might need to know I am not a mechanic in any sense of the word so would it be extremely hard to lift the tank to run these wires under it?
A couple of things: first thing i'd do is open the fairing and check the polarity on the lighter wires. It appears that often the factory had the ground and positive wires reversed as in the positive on the outside and the negitive to the center of the lighter socket. If this is the case your lighter would work fine but you'd experience the fuse issue with anything else. Also, on my 09 Ultra the socket was not completely solid inside which meant that a 12v acc plug wouldn't maintain contact. The acc 12v socket that Harley sells is a direct replacment for the lighter and will fix that issue. In the event that you still want to run a line there should be switched power in the fairing, mine was an extra set of leads on the headlight harness; your 05 is probably similar. I wound up running a dedicated powered usb for my gps from that source.

I have my GPS plugged in and my ipod and it's not been any problem. I use a duel plug but it does stick out far so I have to mindful that in a sharp turn it doesn't break the plug.
You can fish the wires through the tunnel in between the tank...pretty easy..along where the other wires run...realy no need to remove tank unless you just want too.. I use a long zip tie one time and a old car ant to do it before......
I use the stock Bat Wing mounted receptacle to power the GPS with no issues whatsoever. I got an adapter at Walmart that is very low clearance and the plug misses the tank by 1/4" at full lock of the fork.
I only use the cig lighter to light cigarettes - do know that it blew a fuse on the 010 Ultra Classic when I had the tire air pump plugged into it. My 2012 Ultra Ltd comes with one installed in the tour box
I use it for GPS and my I-phone. Got a USB adapter for acc plug, it is short and just clears the plug hole itself, has a good inch on Clarence from tank.
I use a charger that has a 90 angle as well. I use it when setting tunes and GPS from my phone at the same time through the AUX port.
Using the GPS and tunes together tends to drain the cell battery a bit, but when hooked into the lighter, it helps battery life for long hauls. I zip it all in my mesh and look wired.
Not the original question, but it is kind of cool to listen to tunes then have them quiet down and the girly GPS voice gives me directions then the tunes slowly come back up.
I just wanted to use it to charge my iPhone which I keep in a RAM mount on the handlebars. I bought a USB adaptor plug that fits flush in the fairing cigarette lighter outlet from Hog Tunes. Shouldn't have any clearance problems with the standard iPhone USB plug. Should be here any day. Looking forward to trying it.
Been using mine for the GPS with no problems. Also has been successfully used for 12v air pump a few times and to charge the cell phone. It is fed by a 15a fuse, so none of the aforementioned should present a problem for the circuit.
I know the dealer told me not to use the cigarette lighter as an accessory plug because it may pop the fuse, so they recommended I have it swapped out with the accessory plug. Could be just another one of things to nickel and dime us to death though.
If you have a problem using a charger but the lighter works then the plug is wired backwards. I have seen this several times, easy fix, take the front of the fairing off, the positive needs to be on the center post and the negative on the outside of the adapter. If it's reversed the lighter well work but not chargers, will fry them or blow the fuse in them.
