I probably know the answer before asking, but here goes. Has anyone used the cigarette lighter plug as a power port for cell phone chargers? (actually I read the owner's manual and it obviously suggests not to), but I figure the charger would tax the system less than the lighter.
I haven't tried it but have read reports from others how they used the lighter plug for all sorts of gadgets without any problems. I've heard to look for any clearance issues between the handlebars and gadget charger/plug. Otherwise I think you'd be good to go.
I wanted to use mine (09 Ultra) to power my GPS but it wouldn't work; the lighter socket on our bike is different from a 12v outlet. I purchased the HD accessory outlet and replace the lighter with it (direct replacement) works great.
HD came out with an accessory adaptor that is designed to be wired into your tour pac for charging cell phone, ipod, etc... Sorry I forget the name/part no. but did see it at the dealer a few weeks ago and they said it was a new accessory.
I put a xtra power port plug in tour pack got ir from walmart wirerd it to power wires already in place got a plug from a harley hooked up and good to go total investment 8.00 charge phone mp3 what ever you want I have a 12volt coffee pot left over from my truck driving days on the road and it still makes a good cup of coffee will take along on yellow stone trip this summer .
I am having the same problem on my 2010 Ultra. The cigarette lighter plug actually fried one of my Ipod chargers immediately when I plugged it in. Harley said that it meets their standards because it will light a cigarette....... I'm glad Harley is happy!!!! ha ha
I think I need to change my plug out like vistavette had to do. Nice bike vistavette, mine is the same color........ great ride...
I use mine for lighting smokes and for my ipod. I have not had any problems on either of my batwings. I however lost my lighter once becuase I didnt push it in far enough. I have the 6 gallon tank on my 09' and need to use a small plug as clearence is an issue.
I bought the Harley part that for mounting in the Tour Pak. It is an easy install and works great. I don't want to risk tank damage with 12V plugs in lighter.
I have both; I use the cig lighter for a charger for cell phone/gps-it's plugged in all the time whether or not it's charging something or not. As well, I have a power adapter in the tour pack. No probs over the past year
i installed a 12 volt plug (cigarette lighter [got it at napa]) on my 01 Dyna on the side of the fuse box cover just for a cell phone charger on long trips. never have had a problem with it works just fine and dandy.
I use my GPS when cruisin the long trips on my 09 Ultra and mount the GPS on top of my fuel cap. Works great. I do disconnect it and stow it away before locking my bike up because of the clearance with the fairing.
My son, on his street Glide also lost his lighter because he didn't push it in all the way and it popped out along the way.....Darn it. Can't have anything nice!!!
I was told by the dealere that if you plug anything in accept the lighter it can break the fairing. I ride a Road Glide. From the posts here, looks like I can start charging my I-pod and cell phone. Both have very small and light plugs.
Break the fairing? What's with these dealers and their BS. I use the lighter socket on my 04 RG for my GPS and never had a problem. I just don't understand the issue here.
Has anyone had any problems with the lighter just not working at all? I have taken my 10 Ultra to the dealer once and was told it was a pinched wire, it worked for one day and now is dead again.
09 Glide --- I put a lighter outlet in each glove box---to charge whatever.
