Been readin alot about this lately and don't recall seein this anywhere here. Apparently they use screwdriver and pop the pin behind the saddlebag and walk away with ur bags, whether the bags are locked or not!! Heres a quote from another forum:
Had five friends lose their hard bags to thieves last night at a restaurant. We heard that the boom in saddlebag speaker systems has created a demand for hard bags by theft rings. Most of the bags were locked. Anybody hear of similar crimes? How do they get the bags off so easily and quickly? Anyone found a foolproof way of making sure they can't be stolen. My Road King Classic was spared, apparently because the leather bags are not in as high a demand.
Off hand, I'd say no. My hard bags and tour pack did not come with locks. When I ordered the locks, I gave the parts guy my ignition key number and they got locks all keyed to my ignition key. For the bikes that come with all that stuff, my guess is that the extras are keyed to the ignition key. Therefore, I'd guess there are as many tour pack/saddle bag locks as there are different ignition locks/keys. As an aside, the bike came with 2 keys, and each additional lock came with 2 more. I have a bunch of keys around somewhere.
So just a thought. Would it not be better to install the screw on the front of the bag? That way if someone tried to steal it you would still have a connection and may make it easier to ride it home or where ever you needed to go.
its harder to get into the spring clip on the front because of the seat and strap bracket. i looked and felt the rear one is most easily accessed.you could replace both if makes you more comfortable. only talkin another $7. still way cheaper than the $55 brukus kit.
I used some blue thread locker because tightening the bolts to where they felt snug squished the rubber grommets much more than they were squished using the Dzus fasteners. Setting the bolts for about the same level of squish left them feeling quite loose.
:thumbsup well if you look past your upright thumb with your right eye and stick your tongue out and hold to the left while looking at the rubber washer as your tightening it.........:laugh:laugh. sorry couldnt help myself
All fair enough. Years of seeing similar set ups has proven that grommets with too much pressure on them will crack and split and need to be replaced frequently until the correct level of pressure is maintained. Then they will last a reasonable time. See how much grommet sticks out around the washer with the factory fastener and then tighten the bolt to achieve the same picture and you've got it. Tighten the bolt until it feels snug and you'll see the grommet squeeze out around the washer. The edge is stretched and will crack and split much sooner than it would have otherwise. I haven't checked the price of replacements, but I'm confident is is more than $.25.
Alright, mine is done after a quick trip to Home Depot. I saved 60 cents over you guys because we don't have sales tax here in Oregon Great tip... thanks!
I added to the bill of materials 4 fender washers to be installed between the grommet and the speed nut to avoid the sharp edges of the speed nut from cutting into the grommet.
What recommendations would anyone have for locking the lids on the saddle bags of my Road King Classic. They are the leather hard bags. Is there a kit available? Sully
In a word, Brukus. I am shocked that nobody has mentioned them. Granted you can pay less and achieve the same results but they are a mom and pop shop doing a great job of securing bike stuff. I have most of the things they make so take a look at their site. If the link does not come through just Google Brukus.
Well have to take bags off to put on the chrome muffler bracket covers Santa brought , sounds like a good time to do the change , need to hit Home Depot I guess
Good on you and all others that have gone this route. At least ya don't have to worry about that darned security tool that comes with the Brukus equipment.... :laugh
In the meantime my bags are secure, high dollar Mustang seat, windscreen and pillion when I have the OL with me. :cussing
On another note I was recently on a PGR mission and saw a guy that had their WingShield (hand deflectors) and if I did not have a complete set of Gerbing's gear I would have that as well.
BTW, Kay and Dan are top notch people. She is a bit gabby but a good southern gal.
