I have used the kill switch on my `89 Softail to shut the engine down for 27 years, still works fine, same switch as on the OP`s bike.
OP: I have looked to replace my switches just because they are getting pretty old at this point, but it looks like the only parts available are the aftermarket (probably Chinese).
You could upgrade to the `96 and later configuration, but this would also require `96 and later switch housings, master cylinder, clutch lever perch...
