Yep... the shoes going bad is a known problem... the kicker is, nobody knows exactly how long they will last (and while I don't remember if there was a specific recall... I know that some dealerships were replacing the parts under some kind of warranty for several years). Mine went around 13k, IIRC. If I was you and if you're planning on keeping the bike a while, I'd get the gear drive.
