Making Side Mount License Plate / Tail light Mount

I want to make a side mount license plate / tail light mount. I plan installing it on my bike after the riding season but just wanted to get some ideas and maybe start making it in a few weeks. It doesn't seem like the toughest thing to make but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. Maybe some doe's and don't s. I have known some other guys that made them and after a while they brake off and they are dragging them down the road. Any pointers is much appreciated.

Let me add what I plan on doing. 1.Cutting a piece of metal (not sure how thick) to a shape of a license plate leaving some room above it to mount a light. 2.Welding some pieces of metal to the back of the plate so I can drill a hole through it and bolt it on to the bike. 3.Screw or attach the tail light onto the metal above the license plate (vertical mount). 4. Wire it all up. What ya think? Thanks for any help.

I bought a side mount off of ebay several years back that mounts on the axle bolt for about ten bucks, well made and black powder coat. A set of four LED license plate bolts were another couple of bucks.
vertical license plate bracket | eBay
led license plate bolts | eBay
later, dozer

p.s. it was horizontal mount but the same company made vertical mounts for the same dough

Get a piece of quarter or three eight's angle iron the right width for your plate and cut off all the parts you don't want drill the side for your mount bolt. five or six inch wide should work and cut to length.

Yeah you can find them cheap but I'm thinking I'm gonna make it. I do need to find a light for it though. The lights in the link look like they are only running lights and I'll need something for a brake light too. Thanks

I saw a side mount on a bike leaving the dealer. It was on a hinge that could be hinged to the side so as not to be visible from behind, or if you needed clearance to get in a door, or to hide from the red light cameras?

From Hong Kong but it has free shipping. This one looks kinda cool but would seem like a bitch to mount on the bracket unless I'm missing something.
