Old harley in a barn
Could this be happening? I thought these stories only happen to "other" people and more than half are tall tales.
But a little old lady/widow that is close to my in-laws has her late husband's 1972 Electra Glide in a barn that she is cleaning out. I think she is moving. The bike has 27,519 miles and has been sitting in the barn since the mid 1980's? She can only guess but it has been sitting for at least twenty years.
She wants to sell it to my in-laws/me we would get it going again, or she wants to sell it on eBay or Craigslist. I want to give her a fair price, get a good deal, but not rip her off.
I didn't have time to give the bike a detailed look. I have no idea if the bike would turn over after doing the "basics".
How much do you think this is worth to purchase? $2K, $3K? Pics are attached. Thanks so much in advance for your help.

$5000-6000
1972 is an 80 cubic inch shovelhead, with the first year for disc brake front and last year for drum brake rear wheel.
If it's original, it'll bring that easily on the open market.
Don't scam the old lady with a $2-3K offer............

Bike looks like it is in pretty good shape for sitting that long, value really depends on what you have to put into it to get it running. I bought my 1977 FLH for 10,000.00, but it had a 93" stroker motor, custom paint and ready to ride, I would say probably 2-3000.00, in my opinion, although it has been about 4 years since I had a shovel, so I may be off. But you can figure you need tires, all fluids change, carb. cleaned, probably will also need some engine gaskets, I would guess it will take 1000-1500 to make it run and be reliable and able to be put back on the road. It does not take long to spend money if you have to send it to a shop. Nice find though.

Wow, the bike market must suck where I live, that bike would never do that much money here, hell, when I had my shop a customer had a 65 Panhead, totally restored, gorgeous bike, he could not give it away, think he sold it for 8000.00.

From what I could tell, the engine is stock, for the most part. I am certain the pipes are aftermarket and the carb maybe aftermarket, but I believe that would be the extent of it.
I think this women wants to sell it to close friends so she knows it will be taken care of, but also wants to give my in-laws a good deal, and we would pay a fair price.
The bike is in NH and there are more people around without jobs than I could shake a stick at. I know there are few if any around her town that would have the $ to pay right now.
I have been poking around eBay, Craigslist, and Cycle Trader to get an idea, but nearly all the bikes for sale are turn key and ride away, and this bike in question may be 5 miles from blowing up once, and if, I could get it running. And who knows if it needs more than the basics to get the bike back on the road.
KBB says $5500 for a well running bike. Some of the really nice bikes online of the same vintage are from $9K to $11k, but they all had engine rebuilds, and look all shiny with bright chrome and paint.
I definitely don't think it is worth $5k. Maybe $2k is low, so I am thinking $4k.
Thank you for everyone's help.
-Scott

You sure you wanna get that deep into an unknown project? I mean it could turn out to be a seized motor that could cost you who knows how much to repair. Why don't you just give me the address and I'll drive up from Fla this coming weekend and give her a few grand for it. Then you won't have to worry about cost or condition.
Seriously NICE FIND!!!!! $4000 plus in my area would be a sweet deal. If 3 to 4 is fair in your area then you're not hosing the old gal. Jump on that bike now. If you find another in that trim at that price lemme know. G'luck with it.
