Don't use a hammer.

The weights usually get corroded and rusty on the pins they sit on. I'm also suspecting possibly a bad condensor as well... If you're taking it apart, you might as well replace the points and condensor.

Something else that came to mind.... are you running 6 volt or 12 volt.

Depending on what, set your spark plugs at .022 for 6v, and .018 for 12v.

Point gap should be about .022 as well no matter what. If it's dual points, same gap. One is for front and one is for rear.

Its 12 volt. The points and condenser are new but condenser could still be bad. Points are set at .022. I think the plugs are are gapped at .024 so I will have to check them when I get off work tomorrow. I'm just trying to get some ideas and chase down the gremlin.

Could the timing be off enough to cause this problem? If so, how do I go about correcting it?

Sure could. You could have the distributor in one tooth off, making it (timing) retarded. Best to go back to basics, and set #1 cylinder back up on top deaed center, check your points lobe and start from fresh.

Retarded timing will make an engine not want to accelerate and just idle, as well.

Phillip , I'm thinking along the same line as Dave ... fuel / carburation . If anybody had those carbs apart then look into the carb throat where the needle goes down into the emulsifier tube , the top of that tube should have a tapered countersink , if it's flat across the top it's in upside down and will produce the symptom you're describing . If the engine starts easy and idles well the timing should be close enough for the engine to get above idle .
When the engine is idleing does the slide move up when you roll the throttle ? If not try moving it up slightly with your finger while rolling the throttle to get the engine to rev . If it revs that way the vacuum piston is leaking .

Mark the dist.with a marker on the base off the dist and on the case loosen the dist but leave it snug.fire the bitch up let it idle for a minute to get the juices flowin. Now advance your dist while it is runnin. If it gets better its your timing,If no change then its ur carb.
