Classic Bikes

Loving old Harleys and Indians I am surprised to see so little activity here.

Its a fairly new site. Most members are also members over at the V Rod site. I visit both pretty much every day. I'd like to see more technical talk, but that will come along with new members.

I think there needs to be an easier way to find this place when surfing around. It's pretty small but growing.

Buzz,

Thanks for publishing Old Bike Journal when you did. One of the finest motorcycle pubs ever. I devoured every issue I got.

Angry '64 Technical, Electrical

After a friend put new bars (apes) on my '64 duo-glide, my battery kept dying. I replaced battery, then regulator, then had the generator bench-tested, after I put in new brushes. When I tested the voltage, it was 11+ sitting, 13+ running with switch in the first position, and 11+ running with headlight on. I found that current runs through both sides of the switch in the second position. In the third position (with headlight on), I couldn't find any current. My electrical knowledge is very limited. Any thoughts?

I got a bunch of old Hummer parts sidelined for the moment. Nice to hear somebody still has the patience for old timey stuff.

Dave. Thanks! I did not polorize the generator. In the meantime, I have been riding without a headlight. The motor started cutting out at high RPM and something told me to fiddle with the ignition switch. It worked. so I think I found one problem. I ordered a new switch and will re-run the tests after I put it in. I am praying I get lucky. Maybe when I ran the tests it was just a bad connection.?

I have an early '80s Arlen Ness with a Paco FXWG frame. I blew a head gasket on my shovelhead and with shop rates from $85-$100/hr here in San Francisco I got me a Clymers Shovelhead manual and started tearing her down. It was a little tense not knowing for sure I'd get it back together right---but it runs great now. Stay in touch and maybe we can get a handle on this thing together. By the way, I'm a longhaul truckdriver running the Western 11 states and Tonopah was usually my first stop at the diner for biscuits 'n' gravy, but now they're no longer open 24 hrs. so I don't make it as often. Never could figure out if there is actually a town there because all I see on I10 is the diner and truckstop. Good luck with your bike!
