I have owned my 1980 FLT for 17 years and will never let it go. It is reliable as long as I keep up on maintenance and regularly check all bolts.

Bought my early 84' new in April of 1985 and still lov'n it. Road round trip to work 80 miles for years except in the winter. I did total rebuild @ 65,000 miles. Regular oil changes and care and they'll last forever. I've riden it to NY and VA last year from Pitts,Pa. The only problem was my ass got sore. Wish I'd have put the stock seat back on. Tons of memories on that old bike. Vibrates like a beach but pulls like a team of horses. Love the shovelhead.

Nice ride 84FLHS. Makes me miss my 80 FXWG. Made many trips to Daytona on her. Wish it had a belt drive like yours.

Brutus hit the nail on the head. Goes for any bike.

I Heard The Original Plans For The Evo Were Created During The Amf Years And When Harley Took Back Over ,they Finished The R+d. The Reason Why Shovels Get A Bad Rap For Top End Ware Is Due To The Oil System. Nowadays There Is Aftermarket Oil Return Kits That Essentially Make Your Shovel Into An Evo Enabiling You To Get 50k Before Any Valve Ware Occurs. There Is Nothin Like The "shovel's" Humble Rumble! Good Luck In Your Quest.

Some years are better than others. My new 79 Lowrider spent more time in the shop than it did on the road. After I got it sorted out it ended up being a good machine. My 69 EG was a much better ride. They are acually very easy to work on but you gotta like to work on them.

I have a '81 FXWG which was made in early 81. Still has an AMF sticker on the tank. Leakes alittle but has run great. Need to check the tightness on nuts and bolts regularly, but that's all. Same with my '84 FL. It is a strong runner. Both require more attention, but they sound better than the new bikes and really give that motorcycle riding feel. I like riding them over my 2000 Ultra.

I have put a lot of miles on Shovels, EVO's, and the new TC's and have had good service out of all of them. However I do all my own repairs and perform all maintenance on a regular basis. Basically with anything mechanical, you get out of it what you put into it. So if you take care of a bike, vehicle or whatever it will take care of you.
