Running HOT

Hello all.

Finaly finished the top end on my 73 FLH and went for a ride.

Put about 45 miles on her. When I got home i hit it with a laser thermo and she read about 345 to 360.

What is "normal" for a shovel? And what to check out as a cause for running hot?

Thanks to all for the torque info...

HHhmmmm, I have nothing to compare that temp to.

Running hot = running lean. Check your plugs and see if that's the case......

Look at the plugs and see if it's lean. Items that come to mind are intake leaks.

If the plugs are good, the I have to wonder about ring gap, or oiling issues.

First check the plugs......

Not sure about your bike, mine stock FSXTC '07 that would be normal if checked close to the spark plug.

The "over heating" reference needs to be related to a factual set of data.
"Over heating" as to what?
Combustion alone is the source of heat that creates power, usually 450* to 580*.
The "air cooled" engine is designed to cool with external "air" flow. Heat naturally goes to cool, even at 100* ambient, the cooler air is 350* to 480* cooler than the combustion a 1/4" to 3/8" inside a vessel designed to radiate the heat into the ambient air surrounding it.

So where is the "over heating" ?

Not to mention, natural temps of cylinders breaking in will be slightly higher, due to more friction, until the rings have seated into the cylinder walls......

Thanks to all, will check plugs and check for intake leaks.

Rings are new, cylinders honed, gap set to specs from the 74 flh
"bible". Points cleaned and re gapped.

Carb could also be suspect?

If friction heat trumps combustion heat, a seizure is the next event.

I don't see there being a heat problem, with out previous data how can any decision be made?

Like everyone says, check the plugs. If they're bright white or speckled you're running lean.

Also check your timing. Timing is what keeps the rear jug cool!
