Future Rebuild

Hey guys, I'm thinking about having my motor rebuilt over the winter months. I know it's a bit early to be discussing it, but I like to get as many ideas and opinions as I can in order to make a good decision.
Will Harley rebuild my engine? Are there any good crate engines? Anyone know of any rebuilders in the Chicagoland/Northern Illinois area? Thanks

look up an indy shop in your area, will probably get a better job done for a rebuild, or, get a good manual, and do it yourself, will be a rewarding experience

I'd find a reputable Indy shop to rebuild your engine, before I paid a dealer, that has no mechanics that even worked on a shovelhead, or weren't born before 1975......

Generally, unless crank run-out isn't within spec, the top end is the only thing you'll need to freshen up. Valves and seats, guides, pitons, rings and bore. You can add all sorts of fancy-schmancy things to it, but in reality, stock works the best and keeps it simple and reliable.

If you wanted, you could always throw a little more cam in it, and update the lifters and pushrods. A new oil pump isn't a bad idea either.......

Not knowing how mechainically inclined you are, It's not too difficult. I rebuilt a few shovels, and there are a few special tools, but not that many. You may do something wrong and have to correct it later, (I did...) but that's how you learn.

A manual is a MUST for something like this, but at all costs......don;t take it to a dealer.

Probably wouldn't be able to find a dealer to work on a shovelhead. I'd agree with the rest of the posters. Find an indy shop or just a machinist. It's not difficult to disassemble. Bring the heads and sleeves to the machinist to work on and when he's done put it together yourself. It's not to difficult and the learning experience will be well worth it come next riding season.
