240/55..... 240 is the mm width of the tire.
55 is the percentage of the sidewall width.
240mm wide, by 55% of the sidewall width =
132mm tall from the ground to the rim.
240/40.....240 is the mm width of the tire.
40 is the percentage of the sidewall width.
240mm wide, by 40% of the sidewall width =
98mm tall from the tire to the ground.
Basically..... the 240/40 tire is
68mm shorter over all, and
32mm shorter, for ride height in the rear, VS the other tire.
