'82 FLH80 Speedo Fitment

I cannot make my speedometer and surround trim fit together. When I install the speedo, it sits higher than the surround. I have the trim pieces but when I put it all together the speedo sits too high and is kind of flopping around.
Am I missing something or do I have the wrong trim?

Tape the bottom edges of the bezel and leave the trim out then put it all together and see if it fit if it does you have the wrong trim.

Without the trim, the problem will be worse. The speedo sits higher than the surround. If I take out the trim, the surround will sit even lower.

I have a gasket around the speed but it doesn't come into play. It and the speedo sit too high. The only trim I have are the strips in the pic.

Post a pic up of the dash under the cover. The speedo mounting plate that mounts on the frame, between the tank halves.... Something's wrong in there.

That dash cover sits on a single stud. If the tank sits too low, or was replaced with tanks that have shorter front mounting tabs, this is the end result.

The tanks may have to be shimmed UP, to meet the dash, as the speedo/ignition mounting plate mounts to the frame, under the chrome dash cover, not to the fuel tank halves.

Your's is sitting too high..........or your tanks too low.

Here's some pics. I don't think these are aftermarket tanks.

Your speedo is sitting in the mount too high. Check and see if the mounts are correctly installed, as it sits in rubber grommets. If the guy that may have replaced or reinstalled it placed the washers on wrong, will cause the speedo ti sit up, and not sit correctly in it's mounts.

If you life the tank, the ignition switch will go under the dash, and that's right where it needs to be.

I'll wait.........

FYI: The tanks can be aftermarket and the only way to tell is the stamp (HD crest) inside, where the gas nozzel goes into the unleaded, small hole'd port. If it's pre-unleaded, there should be numbers stamped on the front tank mounting tabs, I believe.
