Bracket removal

OK so I have had brackets and things added to a frame, but now I am removing some and that is a new experience. So what is the best way to accomplish this? I am trying to remove some seat mount brackets and others that are welded to the round section of the frame. I am also going to remove the tank cups that are welded to the side of the neck gusset. I am concerned mostly about unintentionally weakening the frame if I just go at it with a mini-grinder. I tried a cut-off wheel attached to my die grinder but there is still a pretty good stub and the weld left. Is if safe to grind the weld flat with the frame tube? No heat induced problems?

on my sportster build I cut off some brackets same as you with a cut-off wheel and then grinded the welds smooth. I'm not really sure I did that the correct way but it worked for me.

I use those real thin 4" diameter cut off wheels to slice them off, then the flap discs to grind them smooth with, the ones with the little pieces of emery paper. Take your time, does the job great.

Some times rather than trying to slice thru the whole thing I would just cut into the welds a fair amount then tap the offending piece with a hammer, good chance it will pop off and you still have the unaltered "save" piece underneath where the weld didnt penetrate with just whats left of the weld to grind or file off.
I wouldnt pound away at it if it didnt break free with a couple lite taps. Just try cutting out the welds a little more or give up and slice it off completly.
