Security System?
How does the security system on a Fatbob work? I understand that you don't need a key to start the bike but instead need to use the fob but, how close does the fob have to be to the bike before it will start?

my 07 has a key and a fob. If my fob is more than say 20ish feet away and the bike is moved the alarm goes off. It can not be hot wired, jumped / push started anything without the fob. Downside is if you are on a nice ride and the battery goes dead in the fob you are screwed unless you carry an extra battery with you.

I don't have a manual, hell, I don't even have a bike. I'm researching before I buy.

So if you're standing in the coffee shop waiting to get served and the bike is less then 20 feet away, does this mean it can be started and stolen without the key?

It's a Hands Free Security Module meaning that you need to have the fob on your person or within a close proximity to the bike , usually within 15 feet . If you're in the coffee shop and someone started moving the bike as soon as the bike got out of range the security system would set and the alarm goes off and it won't start and it squirts hot oil all over the thief !!!
The system can be armed and disarmed using a pin if the fob goes dead . The " pin " is activated with the turn signal switches .

It would die and go into alarm mode.

My 08 has that fob thingy as well but I also have a key. I can lock the ignition switch and forks if I feel its in danger of being screwed with. If the battery does die, I can enter my "secret number" via the turn sig switch's.
Computers dont belong in a bike, give me old school anytime. I figure its not far off before they'll put the internet in a screen on the dash and your connected wirelessly to big brother...LOL...

Think GPS - if you can see the satellite, it can see you.
