What the heck is goin on?

Riding home from work on my 07 FXDWGI, My speedo went nuts and the bike didn't want to idle correctly when I slowed to a stop. Had to keep the throttle up just a bit. The bike starts every time without fail. I didn't find any loose or frayed wiring. I'm thinking ECU...Any ideas or suggestions out there? Thanks ~ Willy

Willy... Sounds electrical. I've had bikes doing the same... once it was an '05 FXDWG and a fading battery was the source.... even though the bike was only a year old. It had enough juice to start it, but the voltage was low enough when underway to make the instruments go nuts, and the idle be erratic. Happened with a V-Rod as well. Then with another bike it was a failing stator. And on another!!! it was loose wiring touching hot header pipes causing a crazy speedo. Could be a number of reasons. Good to have you here.

Check for codes ... hold the trip button in while turning the ignition on , hold it until it goes into diagnostics mode in the miles window but not too long or the codes will erase . Toggle through the code positions and note any codes then post them here .

Star Washers

A common problem with a lot of bikes causing all sorts of erratic operation are poor battery connections. It stems from the type of connectors used by many battery manufacturers. Don't just check for tightness, clean your connections, add a star washer to both the +,and - sides, and properly tighten. A small amount of dielectric grease is good too. Poor connections, can cause the ECU to receive erratic supply voltage, causing it's outputs to become erratic as well. This of course may not be your problem, but it's good preventative maintenance anyway.
