Hi there aussiebob ! Ya you have to remove the cover to put on a new cable . The cover the cable goes into comes off easy , you might have to loosen the exhaust to get clearance and you'll need a new gasket for the cover plus 1 qt. of trans fluid because you have to drain the trans too .
You get the cover off and inside you'll need a large snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring then pull out the cam assy. then remove the cable end from it and put everything back together in reverse order with the new cable .
Best to have a HD service manual handy when working on your bike .
You'll probably have to replace other cables or extend wiring as well .

You'll see most of it here: 5-Speed, EZ-Pull install

If you do it on the jiffy stand, you won;t lose all the trans fluid. If it's time to change it, then this would be a great time, or changing it to Synthetic, if it isn't already.
