2010 SGC Handlebar change

Hey everyone, Looking to change my stock Buckhorns for a set of Z style handlebar. Going to change my grips while I have the handlebars off. Question? Any PDF's showing how to change the grips and throttle sleeves? How about you "Dave63" since you are the new Wikipedia of Harleys.

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Your Z-bars need to have "dimples" in the bottoms, where the control pods mount, to clear the wiring harness, unless you plan on internally wiring the bars.

The throttle sleeves come off, (as does the right grip) with the right control pod. You can either cut the old, stock grips off with a razor blade, or use compressed air, to "blow" them off. By sticking the air nozzel under the edge of the grip, the air lifts the rubber grip and you pull it off....

Another trick is to sneak a thin screwdriver under the edge of the grip and squirt windex, whitewall cleaner, Simplegreen (insert spray cleaner here) and work that around until it slides off.

BOTH OF THESE METHODS do not require you to remove the throttle tube, if you have just grips. If your new grips came with a throttle tube, you'll need to separate the control pod, remove the throttle/return cables and replace the entire throttle tube with the new one.

If you have "fly by wire" you need to have bars that have the same "notching" in the end of the bar, in order for the throttle sensor to work properly.

Reinstalling grips can be done with water. I use clear spray paint. It acts like a lube to put them on, and a mild glue to keep them there.

I used to recommend hairspray, as it's water soluable. It was told it *could* undo itself if caught in the rain, but I never experienced it.

Whatever you use, spray it IN THE GRIP and not on the bar. If you spray it on the bar, the grip acts like a "squeegy" and just scrapes it off.

DO NOT USE MOTOCROSS/DIRT BIKE GLUE. It will bind up the throttle tube......

Here is a link to the installation instructions for Kuryakyn grips. They should hook you up even if you are installing a different brand.
