2007 Dyna Super Glide Fluid Change

I've just put the first 1k miles on my FXD. For engine oil I plan to use Mobile 1 20-50. The manual says that the capacity is 3 quarts with a filter. Is that the right amount for an oil change? The capacity for my XL 883 that the manual quoted was higher than what the engine would actually hold when changing the oil. I guess that has something to do with not all of the oil draining out when the oil is changed.

The book does not say to partially fill the oil filter before installing it. Is this not necessary on this engine?

For the transmission I am using Spectro synthetic transmission oil (fluid). The manual says that it takes a quart. That seems simple enough.

For the primary I am going to use Mobile 1 20-50. The books says to use only Harley Formula + Transmission and primary chaincase lubricant. Is this Harley pushing their products or is there a reason to use their oil? Is there a better oil than Mobile 1 20-50 for the primary?

It says to use 32 ounces wet, or 40 ounces wet. It does not say that the oil should be to the bottom of the clutch, just add 32 ounces. That worked out fine on my XL; I just drained all the transmission fluid and added 1 quart through the primary chain inspection port. Am I safe just adding one quart and not worrying about where the oil is relative to the clutch?

The manual does not say to do any of these procedures with the bike on the jiffy stand or sitting vertically on a jack. It does say to check the engine oil and the transmission oil on the jiffy stand, but not what is the best way to drain the fluids.

I did some searching on previous poster here and did not find what I was looking for.

And I did order the service manual, it still has not arrived.

Hey Pete:

For the crankcase, add 2.5 quarts wet. Check level and adjust as needed. Once the oil shows on the dipstick halfway between the add and full lines, you are good. Too much oil will cause blow-by in your air cleaner. As for pouring oil in the filter before installation, that is personnel preference. I do it and allow a couple minutes for the oil to soak in to minimize mess when I go to screw it on.

Tranny is 32 ounces.

Primary is suppose to take 32 ounces. I pour in about 26 ounces, then with the bike upright check level to see if it is high enough to reach bottom of clutch and add as needed. Too much primary fluid can cause issues finding neutral and cause rough shifting. The primary chain on your Super Glide is self-adjusting, so there is no inspection plate. The primary is refilled through the clutch inspection plate (derby cover).

To drain the fluids, look under the transmission and find the pan which has two drain plugs. The one on the side of the pan is the oil, the one on the bottom of the pan is tranny fluid. The primary drain plug is on the bottom of the outer primary cover directly under the clutch inspection cover. I drain each hole while the bike is on the jiffy stand, then stand the bike upright to allow any possible remaining fluid to drain.

What fluids are best to use? That is the million dollar question? The main thing is use products which meet the manufacturers specs and ratings. Harley recommends their fluids, but the Magnuson-Moss act provides for the use of other qualifying fluids.

Mobile 1 20/50 V Twin Synthetic. 3 quarts for the motor. Usually only hold 2.5 or so.

I dump in 1 quart of Bell Ray trans gear lube .

And then 1 quart of Bell Ray Primary fluid.

Close it up and ride the schitt out of it.........

Nothing to it......

someimes running a search on these topics can yield very good results.

i prefer lighter in the primary. i run amsoil 10w40 and it really improves the feel of the clutch and shifting. i have also seen on here that people run ATF with good results. but in my opinion 20w50 is a little thick not for the chain but the clutch.

I don't usually fill the filter cause putting it on gets messy. I do pull the spark plug wires and plugs to inspect them. Then I simply crank the engine with the plugs out but connected. It turns freely and after about 2-3 cranks the filter should be plenty full to avoid a dry start.
