The thing is, I'm buying it as a project. I'm prolly gonna replace or refinish every component on the bike. So the motor is the only issue with the miles. He just dropped $500 on a new set of tires, it has new rims on it too.
So the question is. How long will the motor last? If meticulously maintained?

I've got a friend with a Honda that's got 260,000 miles on it and just talked to a guy with a 95 dyna thats got 126,000 on it, engine was just rebuilt. As long as you take care of it, a long ass time. How often are you going to ride it?

Things you need to know about a 1999 Twin cam bike:
1.) Were the inner cam bearings replaced? Failure was common and no official recall was ever put in place, but they'd repair it, if it failed. Bitch was, failure caused massive damage in some cases.
2.) Were the cam chain tensioner shoes ever replaced? Failure is common after 25K and after replaceing a few engines, HD decided to make it a 25K Maintenence item, where it was never thought to be necessary.
You need to know these two items of info, or you could be buying a bike that will suck a bit of money out of you.

I just rode all day with a friend of mine who has 126K on a 2000 Road King and never had any issues at all.

Hehe, looking at a bike today, was beautiful. Here is the info, VIN 1HD1GGV19XY321457. Miles 24,432. FXDS Con Dyna Convertable/ Dyna Super Glide Special (different sites gave it a different name. Second is the Harley site.)
Had a Regular introduction in 1999 from the York PA plant. If anyone else can find anything let me know. Dave, is this the model and stuff you where talking about with the problems. I listened to the engine on the right side (side with the pipes, just incase im that tired) and heard nothing out of the ordinary.
On the test ride: Runs pretty well, had a little sound like something rattling, going back tomorrow to check it out, i think it was just the starters tin covering that or it was the part that the bags male end goes into, yes, comes with easily detachable bags
Anyone got any ideas on the bike I mentioned as well?
Thanks.

If it is a twin Cam in 1999, then what Dave said is very true..earlier with an EVO engine is great or mid 2000s from 2002-2005 or 2006 would be OK...

not really, EVOs are the best Harley made...Twin Cams were designed to meet new EPA regulations on emmissions...thus you can not get a carbureted TC now..only fuel injected with leaned out air/fuel ratios...The TC runs hotter because of this..then you get into the TC cam chain tensioner issue...The reason that they went to the twin cam setup was to get rid of the upper engine noise, thus what they refer to as the "silent chain"....the negative to that are the tensioner shoes and related issues, you can Google it and read the stories about failure issues...I am going to change mine out for gear drive cams later this year and illiminate the problem,...S&S engines build on the EVO design with lots of success..my next scoot will be a 99 down RK with a tired engine...will drop in a S&S 103 inch motor and a Baker 6 speed...will have a road machine.....
