Can I put a wide glide gas tank on my fxd?

I'm sick of deciding where to put my damn speedo. If. Buy a wideglide set of tins. Will they fit on my fxd? There is a local guy with a tin set off a 2003 100th anniv. Wide glide, silver and black. This way I can put the speedo in the gas tank console.

Next question. Is the speedo the same on all the bikes? So all I have to buy is the dash? And it should drop right in? And can i relocate my ignition to the console too?

Maybe someone has done this and can give me a parts list of everything I'll need??

Also my bike is a 99 fxd. So the tank should be the same up to 03 right? They changed it in 04?

You can make the tanks fit the FXD, but you may have to make different mounts, as I believe the frames may be different. I know the speedo is NOT the same. The speedo for the wideglide is larger in diameter the your FXD, and fits in a "dash" panel that you'll need to get as well. You'll also need to make a harness to bring electrics up into the dash, or figure where they come off yours and run them up under the frame and tank to the dash. Keeping in mind, the WG's ignition is in that dash too, as you stated. You can run the ignition wires from the plug under your seat (3 wires total) to up under the dash and go to a new ignition switch and maybe get it keyed to your original key. The new ignition switch for the WG will accept them in the right configuration.

The hardest part will be making the mounts to look like it came that way. It shouldn't be too hard.

99 FXD tanks were the same (except color) from 95-03. Mines a 1995 with a 1999 tank on it.

You'll lose your gas guage in the swap.

I thought the tank would fit without modification. The frame should be the same on a fxd and wideglide. I will buy the dash. I'll have to find a speedo because I thought they were the same size. Bit no biggie.
