2005 super glide custom

I just bought a 2005 Super glide custom. When riding the ride is rough on the front end. The handle bars vibrate rough. Its feels like the front tire has twice as much air as it should. But doesnt. Bike has 14000 miles on it. The front tire is worn down some. I notice oil leaking from top of one front shock. Any hope in obtaining a smoother ride by tire replacement n rebuilt shocks? Is it normal for this model to ride rough?

I have the same model/year bike and when you say rough I assume you are speaking of the ride on the highway? That is not normal, but the vibration you mention is normal especially when sitting at idle. You mention oil leak from fork and that may be part of the problem, but I would say you need a new tire w/ that many miles on it assuming it is the original tire?? About the only thing I have not changed on mine is the basic chasis and wheels but the ride down the highway has always been smooth as far as suspension goes, but there will be vibration/buzz on the Dyna compared to say, Softail w/ balanced engine. The Dyna is what some call the "entry level" to big bore HD's and think of it as a blank slate on which you can build/modify to about any level you want as time goes by.

"Entry Level"????? In my humble opinion ( but bias opinion) the Wide Glide is a fantastic motorcycle. It looks like a real old school motorcycle and has more than enough power. Since I have one (2012 wide glide) I have installed a new two up seat, back rest, and windshield for longer trips. All comes off in less than two minutes and the bike turns back into a boulevard blaster. This is the coolest of all the Harley's. but that's just me talkin.

No offense intended by the use of "entry level" for any of the Dynas. No question your Wide Glide is a fantastic bike. Only meant that the Dynas are where one starts price wise in the HD line of big bores. As you, have changed out seats, trim, lights, engine, peg arrangement, etc., etc., and have it just the way I like it now and based on the dollars invested will end up riding it till I am not able to get on the seat. Swore that I was done adding to the bike and just couple days ago added one of those whizbang speedometer/tach combos w/ endless color selections. It's an addiction!!

If oil is leaking from the front shocks you may well have found your problem. I would certainly get that fixed before you did anything else.

One other place to look other than shocks and tires are the riser bushings.

I had a 2006. They frontend was rough and noisy. Harley shop said many of them were and i rode another and it was the same way, due to flex in the front forks on the heavy frame engine combo. They fixed that problem on my 2012 FXDC by increasing the fork size to 49mm from 41mm on my 2006. Its rides much smooth and quieter by comparison.

First thing regardless of vibration get the fork seal fixed, run your hand over the tread patch of your tire to see if it's chopped (bumped high andor low spots. Also check bearings spacers and riser support. Should be one of those.

Dealer is an idiot. I've ridden many Dynas of all years. They are smooth as glass. They are built to be smooth. Especially the Super Glide. If you have oil coming from your forks then you have a problem. Take it in and have the dealer replace the seals, put some fresh fork oil in, and tighten everything up. If you have a spoked front wheel you need to have them make sure it's still trued. If the previous owner hit something and knocked the wheel out of true you will get vibrations no matter what.
