Unhappy everything dies

2000 heritage, when i went to start my bike this morning, i turned on the switch, everything came on like it should, but as soon as i hit the start button every thing went dark [ lights went out gages went out starter would not make a sound]
could not find a blown fuse or bad connection, when i took the switch panel loose and checked the back with vote meter to see if power was coming through, it seemed to reset something, and the lights, etc. came back on, but as soon as i touched the start button everything went black again. what do you think????

Battery terminal loose, or battery has dead, shorted cell.

Start by checking the terminals.

I agree with Dave. Most likely just a loose battery terminal connection.

Check your batt. cables also make sure they aren't rotted or broken.
