Weird wiring problem

I am wiring a bike using the schematic of my 95 Road King.

Here is the problem, I have nothing connected except from the battery to the starter, then on to the 30A breaker. That is the input to the breaker. On the out side of the breaker I have the input from the Voltage regulator. The regulator is not connected to the stator at this time.
So this is what happens, every time I connect the neg. side of the battery to frame ground I blow the breaker. The VR output wire does not show a short to ground. The output wire does not show a short to the body of the VR. The VR is grounded to the frame. I have replaced the VR also.

Remember I DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE IN THE CIRCUIT. Just the wire from the battery to the breaker and the VR to the output side of the breaker. As shown in the schematic.

What the hell is going on here? This is not my first wiring job by far!!!! I am losing sleep over this one.

Eliminate connections one at a time . First unground the VR but keep the wire to the breaker connected , if that doesn't do anything then disconnect the breaker wire from the starter . That should do it because , as you stated , nothing else is connected to that circuit . Test the breaker itself too , from the breaker caseing to both lugs for continuity , there should be none .

Well, I pulled the voltage regulator off the frame, with everything else disconnected and the breaker did not blow. So I connected everything else up as required and the breaker still did not blow. Great news, hey!!

Now for the reason why. The VR is supposed to be grounded to the frame, this does not seem right.

This is a customers ride, does not feel right to leave the VR isolated.

I guess I will have to isolate it using the iso mounting rubber studs.

The VR HAS to be grounded to the frame . Excess output from the alternator is disappated through the regulator ground when the battery reaches it's full state of charge . If you don't ground the VR the battery will fry ! Might even fry some wiring too ! Sounds to me like you've got a faulty VR . I've seen them bad new right out of the box .

I have swapped it out with another one and the same thing happens.

I could have two bad ones, I will order another one and try it out.

Well I got a new VR today and hooked it up and lo and behold it did not blow anything. Chalk that one up to experience, thanks for the input, guys.
