Speedo cuts out intermittantly.

Hi,

I am having the same problem with my 2005 XL883c Custom. The speedometer stops working intermittently and check engine light comes on.

What should I check to start with?

Thanks in advance.

Check for codes, and also for a loose connection at the speed sensor on the trans. Code information and instructions can be found as a sticky in the Electrical section of the forum, just above this.

Take the speed sensor out of the top of the trans ( one 3/16 allen bolt ) and clean the ( fur ) debris off of it . The ( fur ) debris interrupts the signal to the speedo . The engine light means there is a stored code and can be cleared by holding the trip button in for about 10 seconds while turning the ignition on .

Thanks Dave63 and Schmidtys for your suggestions.

So far, I took out each fuse, cleaned the contacts and put them back. When I removed the fuse that controls the speedometer, it had a black "burnt" looking mark on it. So I used a wire brush, cleaned and inserted.

I went for a quick ride and it worked all the time. So let us hope that was all which was wrong. Otherwise, I will follow Schmidty's recommendations next.

Thanks again.
