Question 1990 Chop-ster charging problem

Hey folks,
Just finished building a sporty chopper, 1350 bad to the bone bike, but I have a problem with the charging system!
Stator puts out 30 volts A/C at 2500 RPM and is not shorted.
Regulator puts out 20.5 volts when disconnected from battery at 2500 RPM.
Battery is brand new.

When battery is fully charged at 14.2 volts and all wiring is hooked up, battery charges at 14.5 to 14.8 volts depending on RPM's.
After putting on 60 or so miles, batery starts losing voltage cause charging system seems to stop working, but after retesting everything out all voltages etc. have not changed but battery goes dead and will not restart bike! The battery is brand new!!! Any guess what is happening

Have checked all the grounds and even added a #10 ground from battery to frame, to regulator and back to engine, same problem!

Well I would like to say thanks for the help I did get from the two that answered my thread, but I have fixed the problem! I simply replaced the entire charging system and it seems to be work fine... for now!!!

I did find that the insulation on the stator wires was in bad shape and may have been passing current at speed to ground, I'm not sure but induction is a strange creature. After 30 plus years working in the commerical electrical feild I've seen some wierd stuff!

Once again, THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Sounds like there's a bad connection from the negative battery terminal to the engine ground . Also test the ground to the frame on your regulator . Max volts at the battery terminals with the engine running at any rpm should never be more than 15v.
By the way ... Hi There !
