Speedometer 5 MPH off?

I have an 08 Softail and I think the tank speedometer is reading 5 miles faster than I'm traveling. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same issues. I just know that it seems that I need to go about 5 miles over to match other riders speed.

Check it with a GPS.

If you don't have a GPS, you can test it using a watch and the mile markers on the interstate. That is how I have always done it.

According to my GPS my speedometer reads 3 mph fast.
Confirmed by a second GPS.

Like Chasarms said:
60 mph = 1 mile (mile marker to mile marker) a minute.

Most if not all motorcycles read 3-12% ( I've seen Honda and Yamahas that read 12% higher) higher/faster than actual speed. Asian bikes higher than US bikes. I'm not sure if its for a liability issue or what, but I've seen it repeatedly.

http://www.popularmechanics.com/_mobile/cars/how-to/4260708

This article suggests they read higher to show faster top speeds. Regardless, I used to bust guys repeatedly on the race bike forums who would brag about driving 150 mph when in reality, they were only riding 132 mph.

I had the opposite issue after changing to an aftermarket 6 speed. I used the Dakota Digital speedo calibration unit and it works perfectly. I used my GPS to find 100kph, then used the DD unit to correct my speedo to that. Around a $100, but, like I said, I works perfectly.

Thanks to all of you! I now have a few options to check out. I have to try the GPS check... as soon as the weather will permit a ride.

According to my GPS, my speedo is +3 at 70 meaning when I'm indicating 70, I'm doing 67., at 73, I'm doing 70 and so forth. Below 50 it sort of tapers off so that I'm like +2 at 45.

I have the same issue with my six speed, once calibrated do you leave the DD unit in the wiring harness?
