How long should LED's last?

Christmas 2007, I got a Harley-Davidson Illuminated LED Windshield Molding Kit (the trim strip between fairing and windshield) as a gift from my son. Bike was in winter storage and the dealer installed it on an '06 FLHTCUI along with the lighted directional mirrors.

Looked nice, worked in conjunction with my turn signals until two weeks ago. Then, one of the LED strips started flickering on and off continuously. The dealer couldn't repair it so it had to be replaced.

The dealer rep asked Harley if they would warrant it as a defective part. No luck. I called Harley customer service and basically got laughed at. They told me to see if I could get any good will from my dealer on a $200 repair!!! For their fukked part.

So, here's the question; Is it unrealistic to expect more than two seasons of service out of a LED light strip, or are Harley LED's just plain crap?

What's frustrating is that to my mind, a LED should probably last longer than the bike itself. Harley says sorry, 90 days only on parts even if you have an extended warranty and have the part installed by a dealer tech and have never had the fairing off. Unless your accessory was installed when you took delivery, we don't stand behind our stuff for any longer than it takes for your lights to go over the next hill.

I've got LED's in my truck that are going strong after eight years. So, if you are looking at getting one of these, beware! Plus, having a dealer tech do any installs is probably not worth your money.

if the whole strip is going out it probably is not the led's. I have worked with Led's for years. they usually only go out when you apply the wrong voltage to them. also unlikely that a row of them goes out all at once. pull the housing off and check the pc board they are mounted to. possible just a bad solder connection on the board. being in the 12 volt eletronics bus i can tell you that most of this stuff is assembled in china and just thrown together for pennies. it cost more for a tech to diagnose than the part is worth. i have found that most harley techs are not electrical engineers also. if it aint in a manual or just plug and play. they will spend hours chasing their own tail. if you cant see anything try going to your neares REPUTABLe car stereo place (custom shop preferrably) and see if they would take a look at it. if you can disassemble the faring I suggest you volunteer it. it makes the job easier and cheaper.

I can understand your frustration on the LED molding strip. I am going to add one and the directional mirrors on my Ultra also. But they are doing it before delivery so it will be covered by the extended warrenty. At least a little piece of mind. My service department is very good and I have never had problems with any mods or add ons they have performed. Also I believe alot has to do with the HD service deptments knowledge of the products they install. As "streetnoyz" mentioned, if they hook it up incorrectly you will experience problems. For what you pay for these items it would be nice to know they are not a piece of crap -- I guess we will find out.

I agree with the Harley position; LED's should last for a long time, unless they don't. If they don't, it is your fault for putting this new-fangled crap on your bike. Pay up, sucker!
I agree with above post. If some are working, check connections.
