starter problem

I purchased a '95 Ultra Classic last week, and the guy I bought it from said it had an intermittent starter problem. He said every now and then he had to jump it with a wire from the starter hot wire to I think, the selonoid. I've ridden it all week with no issues until today, and sure enough, I hit the starter and it wouldn't turn over. I jumped it like he said and it fired right up. How can I test to see if I need a new starter or selonoid? I remember a friends Low Rider did this years ago, but I don't remember what he did to fix it. Any help appreciated.
GG.

This could be any number of things but if you can get it started by jumping the starter then look at the starter relay when it wont start . Feel the relay to tell if it clicks when you push the start button , if no click then try a new relay . Also check for pinched wires under the front brake lever perch clamp .
