Might be the cam bearings going bad . You can isolate the sounds by using a long bladed screw driver , put the handle end to your ear and probe around on the engine with the other end . Listen around the bottom of the lifter tubes and at the timer cover .

Ditto. INA bearing finally went, but should have whined before a total failure.
Does it speed up and slow down with the engine RPM, or vehicle speed?

Does the noise change with speed ? Not that it's a high pitched vibration that sounds like a whine . Maybe the front motor mount is bad and some part is vibrating against another part or something .

One thing that is priceless for hunting down unknown sounds in any engine, even a good quality one will only cost around $35 to $50 bucks, and a cheap one is around $12.. is a mechanics stethoscope, they are priceless, and it will save hours of time playing hide and seek with noises, you can find the cause of most any engine noise with these.. and its nice to give things a good listen a couple times a year.. its a lot better to find a bearing heading south while you are in your garage, and learn that bearing died and your out on Hwy. 50 in Nevada some place 100 miles from hell.. and with this you can do just that.. add a colortune with this, and you can give your ride or anything around the house you need to check a very thorough check up in less than 40 minutes..
