Excessive oil thru air cleaner

Help! I have a 1989 FXSTC with ? miles on it. It was well cared for by the previous owner. Recent care for elderly family has resulted in the bike sitting for months on end. While adjusting the carb a small amount of putty looking stuff started leaking out. It got worse from a small amount of oil to an almost steady flow. Now, within 5-10 seconds of starting, it is flowing out the breather. The oil filter has been replaced and I eliminated the oil cooler with the same result. When connecting the lines from the oil cooler, there was oil on the (return?) side and none in the hose from the oil filter. I am not afraid of wrenches but I am by no means qualified for serious engine work. Your knowledge and suggestions would be appreciated.

You might want to check the oil level. I was told if it is toooooo full is will leak out the carb area. I not for sure but would be worth checking. Geoff in Everett

Thank you for your help. I never thought a resume was necessary for help. My symptoms were not exactly the same as what I had read in the search area. Either way, it looks like I've wasted my time. My mistake......

Your oil pump check ball is stuck from sitting and needs to be cleaned, so the engine stops sumping through the breathers.

Take it out, clean it and reinstall.

If you look at the top of the right side engine case, on the oil pump, there's 2 large screws on it.

One sits up high, and the other sits lower.

It's the low one. (B)

Take the screw head out.

Take a magnet take the ball out.

Check the ball for any flat spots or imperfections and if it's OK, put in back in.

Afterwards, take your airfilter apart and wipe it out.

All,
I appreciate the comments and help. For those of you that bit your tongue thanks for patience. The website is not for a 'newbie '. It can be overwhelming. I overlooked some things that I should have handled before asking for help. My mistake. I've gone back and introduced myself. There was no disrespect intended to anyone. As I mention in my life story, I am not a member of any group, I don't ride across country. We live in a small rural area of East TX. and that is where my Grandchildren and I ride. You can't imagine the pride you feel when you are at Grandparents Day at school and your Grandchild says "My Grandpa has a Harley"..........

Looks like I need a bigger magnet. (I know,I know, size matters..!) No luck yet but with y'alls help I know what to look for. The diagram and directions have been really helpful. I'll keep you posted. Next couple of days will tell.
Thanks again for your help.
