Oil usage...

I've been searching and I can't seem to find a direct answer....so I'll ask.

I have an 08 Heritage and it has Syn3. I bought it used with a little over 1400 miles and the previous owner had that put in at the 1000 mile service. I've put 2400 on it in three plus months and have "used" nearly a half a quart of oil. No drips, no apparent blow-by or at least not excessive or noticable. I don't fill it to the top "full" line on the dipstick but keep it around 3/4's of the way up if that's relevent. I check the oil per the owners manual every time I get home as it's at operating temp and my garage floor is level.

Is this "normal"? I've heard all the jokes about Harley's for years as far as leaking, burning oil etc but do they "use" oil in normal operation?

Yup ... actually HD sent out a white paper on the subject . HD suggests that it is not abnormal to use up to a quart per 1000 miles !!! The breather system for example will mist oil into the air cleaner assembly which is then recycled through the combustion chamber .
2400 miles and only 1/2 quart is pretty good .

I was starting to think they did use oil but that seemed like a lot from a former Yamaha owner. LOL
