Dyna Trans Trouble
Hey, figured i would ask this here because the no transmission specific catagory.
My 98 FXD is having what seems to be serious trans trouble. I t is no extremely difficult to downshift, it grinds and will only move alittle was going from nuetral to first. The shifter does not return "home" after you go down or up so im assuming it could be something with the shift shaft return spring. But i dont think that explains the inabiltly to downshift easily of the incredible amount of grinding. It just started doing this today and its definatly undriveable. Im planning to rebuild it this winter, so Now im thinking my teardown is going to start a little early. BTW the fluid in trans and primary are both clean and at correct levels. the clutch is adjusted properly at both the lever and actual clutch.
Any help would be great.

Sounds like an alignment problem in the transmission, especially if you got no metal shavings in the fluid.

Yup ... shift return spring , expensive and alot of taking apart special tools etc. . DO NOT run it that way unless the broken piece of spring came out with the oil . That piece of spring can continue to cause more damage to gears and bearings . When that spring breaks it falls down between the 5th gear and 5th idler gear usually bending or chipping teeth .

Without getting out the book,Can these transmissions be disasembled/reassembled in the frame???Might save You a lot of extra work and down time.

Yes. Trans top cover has to come off, and shift shaft needs to come out, but the entire primary inner has to come off as well to get to it all.

Ouch. thanks for the help guys. I had to run it like that to get it home. only about 3-5 miles. Its a good thing i got the whole winter to complete this. Ill start off my getting the outer and inner primary off. i want to replace anything that can be with a better aftermarket part. So if anyone knows a good source for these parts and what there is out there that would really help.

Hey
So i have service manual for bike it doesnt go into detail on procedure for replacing a shift shaft return spring. So dave or anyone if you can give tips on what im gunna have to do and were i should start. if you just give me the order and were to start i can look up in my manaul how to do all those things but i just don't want to end up doing anything i dont have too. Once again any help is great.

Right , the service manual doesn't specifically outline a shift return spring repair procedure . You will have to take both primarys apart , pipes off , right side trans covers and top cover , and remove trans from trans case . Special tools involved here as outlined in the service manual . If removing the 5th gear with the special tool take extreme care to NOT BREAK out the 5th gear bearing shoulder / flange . The 5th gear comes out of the right side of the case and the 5th gear bearing comes out of the left side of the case so the gear has to be pulled out of the bearing , it's a tight press fit . If there's no damage to 5th gear or it's bearings then it doesn't have to be removed to service the rest of the trans but the trans assy. does have to be removed to service the shift return spring . I would use OEM parts . Using the manual proceed as if doing a trans overhaul .
