1994 Heritage Softail

A friend of mine just bought one of these with 6000 miles on it. It is a 5 speed. Can he ride all day long at 75mph without hurting the motor? He said it "seems" to be revving a bit. How much is an add on tachometer? I just don't want to over tax the engine, but I assume it was made to cruise all day at 75 and he is not sure. I need someone who knows for sure without guessing. Thanks for the help!

75 mph on an Evo 5-speed is about 3000-3200 rpms. That bike can run all day like that.....

Evo's stock Redline is 5200 before any mods, or a module to raise it.

Add-on tachs are $$$ through HD, but aftermarket companies make then for less. Try JPCycle.com or any other aftermarket parts warehouse.

Thanks for the info! I may buy him a Tach for a "new bike" gift. We are suprised how well it runs, it has an S&S carb and ignition module. Runs butter smooth.

I just put on a J&P 2 5/8" tach on my EVO RoadKing over the weekend. Nice little unit, $49.95 and a very easy install on my bike.

At 60mph I'm turning 2400rpm, at 70mph, it turns 2700rpm at 75 it's 3200rpm (approximately). There should be no issue at all running 75mph all day long.

I got over 104,000 miles on mine

Tell your friend to just ride the thing and enjoy it!!..I ride between 70-75 on the highway, its happiest at 70mph, the only mechanical failure I have had in 15 years is the needle bearings in one of my lifters @ 60K miles. When the lifter went I also replaced the stock cam with SE3 cam, made a nice improvement.

Here is what a lifter looks like at 60,000 miles

Its a great bike

I just changed out my lifters and inner cam bearing (I was putting in an EV27) at 57,000.
