1340 EVO Engine (carb)

I have a 1998 FLHTC with a 1340 Evo Engine... My problem is oil blowing back out of the breather, best I can tell. I have put about 4,000 miles since I got her, and for the first 3500 miles no problems. Recently the oil is covering the right side of my bike, after long rides!! The best I can tell it is coming from the air filter area..

I took it to the dealer, he couldn't find anything... so I road it 300 miles and returned, and showed the dealer the oil on the side. They said it was common for the 1340 EVO engine... My concern is for the first 42,000 miles (previous owner) and my first 3,000 miles no problem, now I have a oil blowback problem..

they put a hose and filter on the breather, which should stop the oil blowing back on the bike. My concern is what problem did they cover up??? Any ideas appreciated!!

thanks in advance,

I have seen this happen on a few EVO's. Some times the check ball gets stuck in the oil pump.

and make sure the breathers are open at the heads by the carbs...have seen people use regular bolts instead of a hollow bolt...makes em really blow oil...

Make sure you have the right oil filter on your bike. HD now sells a "One size fits all" filter that has too small of micron rating for the Evo, and since the oiling system is different on the Evo then the TC motor, oil won't return to the tank fast enough and can puddle in the engine and vent out the heads. Judt like you're explaing yours is doing.

The TC engine runs the oil to the filter off the oil pump, where the Evo has it off the return line from the pump, and back to the tank.

JPCycle and K&N still sell the old style Evo filters. I have a 1340 Evo with an Andrews cam and I have NO oil venting what so ever, and when I had my Arlen Ness Big Sucker air filter on there, at the most, I'd see one drip after a day of 70-75 mph riding.

Make sure your oil pump vent line and return line to the tank are in good condition, and not kinked, as well, restricting flow.

Worst case scenerio is that your plastic breather gear has all the veins broken off, which can happen, and you'll have to pull the pushrods and cam chest cover to get to it and replace it. Great time to upgrade the inner cam bearing and cam.....

Don't accept that BS that "All Evos do that...." from your dealer. It's not true. Most dealer's mechanics barely know what an Evo is anymore, since they haven't been made in 10 years.

My dealer also told me that "All Evo's make some sort of valve ticking noise...that's completely normal...."

Yeah.....especially when they come from the factory with undersized cam gears that make a tell-tale ticking noise off the pinion gear, due to improper clearence, from the factory........ {{rolling eyes}}.

That's called "Sumping". If that happens, it's on start up and not during riding. Similar results though.....a freaken mess.

Dave, you are the man!! I think when I am ready to dig into my Chopper (S&S 113") again I'll be shooting you lots of questions. Need to clear up an electrical issue and I'll have it running again, but haven't rode her for about a year. I'm sure I'll have a few issues. Just giving you a fair warning..lol

Dave is right...make sure you get part # 63796-77 for the EVO.. The Twin Cam unit is part # 63798-99...the micron rating is higher on the EVO filter so oil can get through it..If you use the TC unit you will get blow by....got these numbers from an independent Harley mechanic that has seen the problem many times...
