I see both sides of this coin, but I prefer one side over the other, Synthetics are not effected by heat or at least not any kinda of heat my metrics or HD will ever turn out, they still maintain 100% of their lubrication properties well above the hottest temp our engines could produce on their worst day in hell..

There are times when I run my stuff very hard, no trailer queens will ever be found at this address unless someone leaves one out front.., I ride all seasons, its hot as hell in S. Utah during the summer, and I live at 7000ASL, so I dont even have good air density to help cool things like normal air does.. The more stable a engine temp, the more consistent horse power you can make, to be fair, I dont understand the limits on the FI engines ability to compensate for the air density, air temp., air velocity, engine temp, load and so on but there is no doubt it creates better numbers that a carb'ed engine.. too far under temp and you lose power, too high and you lose power and get accelerated wear rates on all contact surfaces with normal oil if that oil is too hot, the more narrow that you can keep that operating temp parameter, the more consistent power you can make.. this is one of the reasons the VROD turns out such good numbers..

IMO, Oil coolers are a must on air cooled engines that are under any kinda of load, its a great insurance policy, and only adds to the life and consistent power of a engine.. even high load liquid cooled engines, from Fords to Chevy to BMW to Lambo's come with oil coolers from the factory, even my old FJ40 Land Cruiser came with a factory oil cooler, oil coolers are especially priceless at low speeds where your not getting much airflow past the jugs.. oil and heat transfer though the inner surface contact of the oil within the cases will become the main source of low speed cooling, especially if you spend the money to get a cooler that is quality, some coolers have a special winding in them that allows for more surface contact time at the surface of the cooler. finned jugs are great for cylinder and heads.. but the oil is primarily in the bottom of the motor (and the tank).. not much to cool those areas, so the oil is for the most part on its own too cool using subsurface contact..

Want a good oil cooler that wont break the bank, look around and find some that are used on metric bikes (its easy to cut a line, remove one of the standard fitting and put a metric on one end then flair it again), coolers that are good quality and easy to come by, eBay has oil coolers in most every size and shape in the MC parts section.. and one very STRONG word of advice.. never EVER go cheap on the lines, use quality metal lines, take your time and bend them with a good quality bender, never use rubber lines with hose clamps, I can almost guarantee that sooner or later you will lose a clamp when you are on I-70 midway between Green River and no place with cell service and 60 miles form the nearest anything.. and of course your solo.. but, on the upside, its a life long lesson you will remember forever!!

Here's my experience with oil temps in Oct 09 on a new 09 RK. Initial fill was 20W-50 Harley 360 oil. I purchased the combination electronic oil level/temp gage and installed it after I put 200 miles on the bike.

Oct 7th, 09, took bike out for a 40 mile ride. Speeds 55-65 mph, then 30 mph for approx. 15 min while in town riding home, temps in the mid 50's. Shut bike off, let sit for a couple of minutes, checked temp, 211 deg. F.

Oct 9, 09, left on trip from central MN to Wis Dells. Temp 26 deg F. Speeds from 55-70 mph. Stopped 117 miles later in Lake City, MN. Checked oil temp after a couple of minutes, 194 deg F with outside air temp 35 deg F. in Lake City.

Rode from Lake City, MN to La Crosse, WI, 77 miles, outside temp 40 deg, stopped at rest area, outside temp 40 deg F., oil temp 211 deg F., speeds 55-65 mph. Rode from La Crosse to Sparta, WI, 29 miles, speed 65 mph, stopped in Sparta, air temp 35 deg., oil temp was 184 deg F.

Rode from Sparta, WI to Wis Dells, 64 miles, 65 mph on freeway, 30 mph for about 20 minutes in the Dells, air temp 40 deg, F., oil temp was 212 deg F.

Oct 11th, back to MN via freeway, 65 mph, 25 deg F., stopped a couple of times between Wis Dells and Eau Claire, 125 miles, 32 deg in Eau Claire, oil temps 184 to 195 deg F.

Final 125 miles home, all freeway, speeds 65 to 75 mph, 30 mph for 10 minutes in town to house. Checked temp two minutes after shutting bike off, 211 deg F.

Had 1000 mile service done after returning home, had dealer put in Syn 3 oil. Rode bike home about 25 miles, air temp 40 deg F., speeds 55-65 mph and 30 mph for about 20 min in town. Shut bike off, checked temp two min later, 197 deg F.

Put bike away for its winter nap. Will be interesting to see what the oil temps will be, summer of 2010 in MN. Bike ran very well in the cool temps.

Dave - I just ordered a D&D Fat Cat 2-into-1 exhaust for my new 2009 FXD. If I go to the SE Stage 1 intake, will the Harley remap of the EFI work ok? Will it add enough extra fuel to cool the engine?

One thing I forgot to mention.. why did all the police bikes from about the 80s had/have oil coolers on them, I would reason that is the factory way of saying hard duty/use engines need the extra cooling.. Police bikes spend a lot of time at low speed.

Hey Murf. Love to ride around the Lacrosse area, great roads. We normally head right over to Prairie DuChein (sp?) and ride between there and Lacrosse for hours and hours. Love that area. Hope to see you come green up.

Standard equipment for Police bikes, from the factory. Police bikes are expected to sit in traffic or be ridden hard, for short distances.

Today's police bikes come standard with the HD Electric cooling fan on the left side. I don't recall if there's a cooler on them or not. I'll look next time I go through the motorpool or walk past the one's the city has.

I'm thinking not, because even as far back as 2003, Police issue bikes came with an EFI Idle Heat Management System and antilock brakes, that the public couldn't get.

Thre's nothing listed or visible on the 2009 or 2010 models, only the EFI "Parade mode" and the left side, electric cooling fan.

Would be interested in knowing what you find, maybe I am wrong.. but I am think most all the police bikes from 03 and up have factory (oil coolers say HD on the side of them) installed when they show up.
