Engine Noise

I'm helping a friend work on his Road king and it has a weird engine noise coming frome the top end. If I had to decribe it I'd have to say it sounds like a bad waterpump bearing on a car. It changes pitch with rpm and is most noticable at idle. I've checked the motor mount, intake manifold and everything in the area that can suck rattle or whistle and it all checks out alright. Using a piece of automotive heater hose as a stethescope I've tracked the noise at it's loudest coming from the rear of the back rockerbox. With the rockers apart I can see some wear on the shaft and the rocker bushings. With the rocker in a vise and the shaft in it I can wiggle the shaft and feel a fair amount of slop in it. So the rockers / shafts will get replaced but till I get the parts and get them put in I won't know for sure if this is the source of the noise. I've never had a bad rocker make a noise like this. Have any of you had problem like this before or have some insight......am I on the right track ? about the only thing else in the box would be the breather???

You didn't say what year RK but as long as you have it that far apart pull the pushrods and tubes out then pull the lifter block out and check the lifter rollers .

It's an 02. When I put the tube to my ear and the other end on the lifter block I don't hear anthing, the noise is way up high coming from the rocker box, sound travels so like you say as long as I have it that far apart...........
