Low Oil Pressure Switch
Howdy
Anybody know what the low oil pressure switch comes on at?
Say...if your pressure is dropping, what would it drop to before the light would come on? I have a '05 883 Sportster and am just wondering about that.
Thanks - Pete

Probably pretty low as my scoot will drop to 10+ psi when it's hot at an idle...

Humor us Pete.....is your's coming on?
HD motors don't run on oil PSI, like cars/trucks do, rather run on oil just being there.
No babbitt bearings, rather, only roller bearings.
Is your light coming on?

I'd bet the oil pressure light should kill the ignition,
that's how low I think it will be before the light comes on.

My oil press light was not coming on. Ever....the switch was broke in the open position . Just bought bike and had a panic attack when I saw it unplugged....only the dealer had serviced the bike. Plug back in and nothing. Ground wire and lite comes on.......so....got a new switch and back in business....
In the meantime, put a gauge on and ...cold....running with 25 psig at idle with old oil.
Now , it's got new switch, new filter and new oil.....all ok.
New switch operates(closes) from 12-6 psig falling press.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Thanks, Pete

That sounds right. I had mine grenade on me on a ride last fall. Blew about 1/2 qt of oil on the rear pipr that was wrapped with heat wrap. Looked like ai was fogging the back 40 for insects......

Hey Dave
You mean the switch itself blew apart? They seem pretty solid.
You must have looked like one of those shot up fighter planes headed down...ha.
