Got a SE air filter? Thinking about going to the SE air filter setup?

Might want to take a close look your filter. I just removed mine and there were what looked like a bunch of holes in it about the size of a pin head. I replaced the SE filter element with the Zipper's filter upgrade unit available thru Drag Specialties which is about 5/8" taller than the SE unit.


For those of you thinking about going to the SE aircleaner, here is a parts list of what is contained in the "kit" that you can order cheaper individually than the kit.

Then go to http://www.4filters.com/KN-Motorcycl...rs_c_10-1.html and enter the part # HD-0800 for the K&N air filter. Should be $55.11.
Alternatively, the Zippers airfilter is available thru Drag Specialties dealers part # 1011-0782 ~$54.36 (Zanotti's price).

Your total should be around $144.89 (not including tax and shipping). This will give you exactly what is in the SE Stage-1 A/C kit with a way better air filter and without the install instructions. The instructions are available in various threads on this forum.

If you have a chrome engine, you can swap the gray back plate (29478-05A) for a chrome variant (29510-05 for $38.95). Bringing your total to $163.61. (PN 29624-08 for '08+ FL TBW)

If you have a black engine, you can swap the gray back plate (29478-05A) for a wrinkle black variant (29586-06 for $31.14, PN 29319-08 for FL TBW), and swap the Chrome A/C Insert (29620-99) for a black variant (29567-99 for $6.36). Bringing your total to $155.80.

Does the deeper element fit the HD high flow back plate?

Yup, sure does. It is what I am running.

You can see it peeking out ~1/2" from the back of the cover in this pic.

My SE filter fell apart shortly after the bike was new. Rubber trim holding the filter together crumbled and was sucked into the engine. That was 2 years ago so I guess there was no engine damage. The dealer gave me a free replacement. With that kind of quality control I don't think I'll buy SE products ever. Well maybe the oil, that's been good stuff so far.

I've actually had good luck with SE stuff, except as you note, the SE filter. Mine had a bunch of what looked like pin holes in the filter element within less than one year of use.


I use the taller one from Zipper's performance.

Ya'know, if this dyno chart is to be believed, this filter upgrade would be
one of the largest hp gains per dollar invested of any mod you could do.

Doesn't what is implied in this chart make you think EFI bikes would need a re-map ?

These claimed gains appear to be w/ stock displacement, stock exhaust,
if my 95" and SE exhaust responded proportionately I'd be glad my SE filter is coming apart.
