Needle Bearings in Case...Advice!
Hi, I'm new to this fourm but have found tons of good information in it. Wish I would have found it before my bearing falure.
I have 2005 Ultra and at the end of a 4000 mile trip last week it started making a noise behind the Cam Cover. I shut it down 30 miles from home and hauled it in.
Took off the cover and the front inner cam bearing is gone. Nothing left but the outer part of it. I can find a lot of post on cam bearings but I can't find any on how to remove the needles that fell in the case. Do they go into the oil pan or am I going to have to split the case (hope not).
I'm going to have to do this myself, after the two week trip on the bike I have no money left for repairs.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Steve

First, you need to know EXACTLY how many needle bearings you need, and be able to account for them all. The worst case scenerio, is having to remove a jug to get down between the flywheels. If there's an easier way, someone will chime in. Also, take your oil pump out and apart and see if anything passed through there, is is lodged in there.
A lot of times with this failure, it starves the top end due to oil pump failure and ruins the top end as well.
Goos luck.

Thanks for the reply. I did notice a slight drop in oil pressure right before I shut it down so I'll definently check the oil pump.

The bike has right at 40,000 miles on it. Not enough for this to happen (in my opinion). I've always use the Syn 3 oil in it and changed between 2500 and 3000 miles since the bike was new.
I'm going to take the pump off and also try the magnets this weekend. I have a complete but empty (no inners) engine case here at work (we build HD OEM exhaust) and looking at it yesterday gave me a couple ideas. It also let me count the needles so I know how many I have to find.

the return lines might of pushed em up there.some of them might of been crushed in the failure process.
