96 Softail Compensator sprocket spring and cup

I have a knock in the front of the primary at idle so I took it apart and I noticed today that the slide cam is running 1/2 to 3/4 up the ramps.(looking at the wear) I thought maybe the bolt was coming loose but it was a bear to get off. This is on a 96 Softail with a 113 S&S motor I have read a few threads and believe it is probably the spring has gone bad. I can replace it with a new one but was wondering if there are any other options out there? I saw somewhere a setup that got rid of the spring and the ramps, has anyone tried one of these? Is there any real reason to have the ramps and spring in there?

Thanks,
Oldgit
