Question 2009 Fatboy Exhaust

I am looking to do the exhaust on my 09 Fatboy. And at this point I am getting more and more confused. I was looking into V&H short shots or big shots I don't want to be overly loud due to having neighbors. What is everyones opinion on these pipes and would I have to do anything else to the bike when I get the exhaust done? And anyone with info about NJ dmv would I have trouble at inspection time due to sound any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great pipes, just don't take off like crazy & neighbors won't be bothered. All (most) pipes are gunna have a hum, deep sound to them once stocks taken off. i have short shots on my '09 Fatbob, they sound nice & still get that crack..just remember with the new EFI bikes you don't get that deep, loud rumble like you do w/ the Evo & other carb bikes...You shouldn't have to worry about DMV, pipes should be fine, baffles...Just remember gunna need a breather & power commander (or other brand module) once you change pipes

Ok more confused seems half people say I need the air cleaner and tuner with the pipes half say i can due just the pipes. Eventually gonna do it all was trying to do it as money available but dont want to screw anything up. My guy that I have to work on bike said the O2 sensors would handle it with the pipes for now is that the case? Or is the tuner a must have bike is new dont want the do anything that will hurt the bike.

I have asked this same question to a number of people. They all told me exactly what JBONE said.

Did your Fatboy have sort of a burning smell when it was new? Was looking at a tourer but the dealer was showing me an 08 Fatboy Anniversary Edition with 469 miles on it. I smelled a burning smell coming from the rear cylinder area and then I noticed that the rear pipe was blueing under the pipe cover. Is that normal and will it go a way. Wasn't looking for this type of bike but for the type of riding I do and my budget, it might make sense. Also do you guys have that whiney fifth gear on your Fat Boys and Fat Bobs?

The 5th gear whine is typical for this bike 5th and 1st gear are straight cut.
the rest are helical cut and quiet....
