Monster Ovals are great pipes. I just ordered a set of D&D Fat Cat 2-into-1 pipes for my Dyna Super Glide. They have a somewhat similar sound to Monster Ovals.
I am weighing not only the cost, but also the hassle of adding a K&N intake and a fuel management unit. The stock bike is plenty powerful and fast for me and I suspect for most other riders too. If someone needs more torque than a stock big twin can provide, he probably needs to think about slowing down or going on a diet. My FXD can get to 100 about as fast as I can churn through the gears. How much faster do any of us need to go on a public highway?
My 2008 XL883 had a stage one intake and SE mufflers. It had more than enough power to haul me over the tallest mountains east of the Mississippi with ease when it was stock. My new FXD has almost twice the HP and torque that the Sportster had and only weight about 80 pounds more, wet.
Getting a fuel management unit set up correctly can be a real pain in the rear end. I have more than a few friends who had them installed only to have to deal with strange power band issues, stalling, and popping on deceleration, not to mention serious drops in gas mileage.
At this point the only reason that I would go to a new intake and a fuel management unit would be to help cool off the engine, but I would probably install an oil cooler first.
