Screaming Eagle Question

Do the SE pipes (Mufflers) have the Federal stamping on them regarding noise and Federal standards???

I haven't seen that ! I don't remember ever seeing that stamped on mufflers . Come to think of it I think the SE mufflers are considered off road so wouldn't require the stamp .
Right ???

Yea and they wouldnt be "street legal" then either I should think.
And Dave would meet the full force of Cornholia Law.

I believe ALL of Screaming Eagle products come with a warning for "Off road use only" or "Will/May void warranty" on them....

Ironic that the dealer sells them, and they're OK....but any other brand is not.

I looked in my 09 HD accessory catalog for the SE Slip on and every bike model I read about stated that they were 50 state street legal with some bike models stating "stock displacements" or "stock models w/ a particular year or later" ie my FXDF stated 08 or later. I never noticed anything written on mine other then the Screaming Eagle script. I did notice some other type mufflers in same catalog (not SE) had stated that they were 49 state street legal but were not legal for California catalyst equipped vehicles. Makes me think SE slip-on are good to go law wise with a stock engine but no fed stampings noticed?
Glad you brought that up as I always wondered about mine but never researched. I bought this bike with them already installed and now I know I'm good to go! at least I think I am
guess you would have to look at a particular year model with no major engine mods to be sure.

Well....states like NY are giving out tickets and towing bikes for no Federal stampings, which is why I ask. Some states lack noise laws in their vehicle codes, however, simply cite under the Federal laws, requiring a bike to meet a max 84 dB rating using a special testing procedure.

From New Jersey Vehicle Code:

Motorcycle mufflers are required to have a visual stamp of identification that links back to a manufacturers inspection certification.

Now granted, this was intended for manufacture requirements only, but apparently, police are using this to determine that a bike's exhaust has been altered, and citing the driver accordingly, if the replaced mufflers lack this Federal Stamp. Hence my question....

MAXIMUM NOISE LEVELS FOR MOTORCYCLES

The maximum permissible noise level for a motorcycle manufactured on or after January 1, 1979 ranges from 78 dB to 84 dB, depending on the motorcycle’s speed and the road surface on which it travels.

EPA initially proposed a graduated reduction in maximum permissible noise level for street motorcycles from 83 to 80 to 78 dB, for the 1980, 1982, and 1985 model years, respectively. Final EPA regulations called for maximum levels of 83 dB for motorcycles manufactured in model year 1983 and 80 dB for motorcycles manufactured in model year 1986 or later.

EPA heard testimony from motorcycle manufacturers and others on the optimum noise level for street motorcycles. Manufacturers favored a limit of 83 dB, saying it would be too costly to meet the lower standards. (Suzuki testified that its manufacturing costs would triple if EPA required it to meet the 78 dB standard. )

EPA argued an 83 dB limit would not produce sufficient benefit to the public. EPA eventually chose the 80 dB standard instead of the 78 dB standard, concluding it would benefit the public while involving less costly changes for the manufacturers (Environmental Impact Statement for the Noise Emission Regulations for Motorcycles and Motorcycle Exhaust Systems, EPA Office of Noise Abatement and Control, December 1980).

These regulations apply to most motorcycles produced in 1986 and later. Manufacturers of after-market motorcycle exhaust systems must meet the noise limits for the model year for which they were manufactured. Different EPA standards apply to motorcycles manufactured before that date, and to mopeds and off-street motorcycles (dirt bikes).

sounds like pricks at work. I see why you now asked that particular question. I will try to see if there is something stamped on mine a little later. I do not remember seeing anything like that on them. I wonder if there is a document that comes with a new set that might have that written, but again if it's "not stamped" on the pipe I guess it won't matter. just what I wanted on my pipes a 3"x5" stamp claiming I'm legal to keep the pricks at bay...
Now I wonder since mine appears to be "50 state legal" What the hell does that mean.
Ahhhhhhhh so much BS so little time eh
