Okay, got my question answered about the different packaging of Red Line Heavy. Would like to get opinions on Red Lines "V-Twin Primary Case Oil". According to their website, this is the same product as their "MTL". I normally run Fourmula +, but might consider changing to V-Twin Primary oil if it had good reviews. Any opinions on this or MTL?

This is a stock gasket and the graphite sure seemed a bit baked. Thinking I must have been running a bit lean this summer. Being the cheap SOB that I am, I've got a used one of these laying around and I think I'll thow that in while waiting on newer ones to arrive as spares.

OTHER THOUGHTS: Not sure if the hotter cam and compression I run was the major cause, or the running it a bit too lean. I got very little pinging and NO shinola on the plugs but my mileage went up to 44mpg. Hmm...

I will eventually install full metal gaskets when I get around to it.

Took the bike out last Sunday, 48 pan low compression e model, and it was running fine. Filled up the tank and went a block and it started backfiring through the exhaust. Pulled over and first thought was ignition. Changed out the points and condenser, fired up and did the same thing. Trucked it home and drained some of the gas out of the tank into a glass container, no water. Pulled it into the garage and drained the rest of the gas into a gas can. Wife says it stink up the garage. Had spark at the plugs, static ignition timing was on, getting fuel. No start. There was a black oily film in the carb. Blew air into the cylinder heads with both at TDC, pushrods, exhaust and intake removed. Seemed that small amount of air coming out the pushrod entry holes in the front cylinder. First thought was a cracked head, blown head gasket at one of the oil passages. Gasket was fine. Inverted the head and filled with mineral spirits overnight no leakage the next day. Did a dye penetrant check on the head because it looked like there might have been a crack on the mating surface to one of the bolt holes. No crack indication just a series of small pourous holes that made it appear that way. Reassembled. Compression check front 75lbs rear 70lbs. Differential air check 80/80lbs. Disassembled carb, S&S. nothing in there that would cause any blockage or restrict fuel, float level check out. Checked pushrods on glass, all true. Adjusted, spin tight. Rechecked full advance timing. Went to start last night. New gas. Turned the distributer about an eighth of a turn toward full advance, normal position. Backfire thru carb. Adjusted idle mixture richer moved distributer to full advance started right up. Moved it from full advance to retard and started to stall. Moved it back and it ran fine. Noticed it's smoking now. It appeared white could see it in the headlight. It's acting like it skipped a tooth on the distributer gear. Pulled the gear out checked for any play or missing tooth, nothing.

Bottom end is about 15years ago. I can't remember if there is anything in the gear case that would explain this like a pin or clip holding gear in place. I know there is a keyway on the oil pump pinon gear but not sure if that would cause this problem. Any one have any idea as to what may cause this I appreciate any advice. Seems like I never have simple problems just the one in a million. :banghead

I have a 2006 Heritage bored over to a 95 and I am running 551 cams. Just recently, my bike started to sputter and miss BAD right at 4000 rpms. It runs fine below 4000 and pulls like a haint. There is no loud noises coming from my pushrods so I dont think that would be it. Also, the bike has to get warmed up good before it starts this sputtering. When I first start riding it runs great all the way to 5000rpm..... I have checked my plugs and my air filter - they are both fine. Any suggestions of where to look next????? Injectors maybe? HELP PLEASE!!!

Reusable Oil Filters

I saw that we have a group buy going on for one of the reusable oil filters. Trust me guys, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. I almost bought one of these filters until I saw that it was rated at 35 microns. That rating will let a lot more junk get through that would be caught by my 5 micron Harley oil filter.

Another concern is that the total surface area of the reusable stainless steel filter is much, much, less than that of a throw away filter. Essentially, when a mesh filter stops a particle, it blocks one hole in the matrix. With a reduced filter surface area, it would seem that reusable filters have less overall capacity to handle contaminants.

The manufacturers of throw away oil filters are moving toward more high-tech filter media, some of which can help neutralize acids in your oil to further protect your engine. Reusable filters can't do anything to neutralize acids.

While there do seem to be some advantages to reusable filters, such as their reduced resistance to oil flow, some of the claims such as large gains in horse power and significantly cooler running engines, that are made by some manufacturers sound a lot more like marketing department sales talk than good engineering.

That big twin in my Super Glide is a pretty big investment. The thought of running what could very well be a less efficient oil filter is not something that I want to do. If the filtration rates of the reusable filter were the same as a throw away filter, I'd buy one, just because they look so cool!

Am I missing something guys?

I recently aquired a 1973 FLH in baskets and there are many parts missing as usual. What rocker arms will work in this motor? I have two that were in the boxes with part numbers 17389-66 and 17392-66. They don't match the parts book numbers. Will this engine run with almost anything that fits? I have two more that look like they are made of bronze with no numbers. This is my first Harley basket case and it looks to be a nice project.

This has always been a hot topic. I wanted to share a post (or parts of it) from something I read years back.

I read an article in a magazine where a guy joined HD's design techs to assist in /designing building the HD twin cam engine. It was suggested by him, after what he saw, that EVERY TC motor run an oil cooler and Synthetic oil, to lower temps, since the EPA forced them to comply with strict a/f ratios. HD TC engines on Synthetic PROVENLY ran cooler, and ones using coolers for the oil, ran even cooler yet.

Funny.....wasn't it about 1999-2000 HD came out with their "own" Synthetic blend oil? I'm not sure...........

The reason HD didn't run factory coolers was, they "...were afraid that if the consumer saw a factory oil cooler, they'd think HD was hiding an overheating problem, and adding the cooler to cure it."

That was a quote, as to the response when the question was asked.

The three best things you can do to lower temps in your HD TC engine is to: (in this order)

1.) Add more fuel to the a/f mixture.

2.) Add synthetic oil

3.) Add a cooler if you live in a hot climate.

Evo's never had hot running issues. My Evo runs at 168-185 oil temps all day long, on the hottest days of the year, on ORGANIC 60wt oil...not even synthetic.

Do the math people........
