I was a "test the metal" ride yesterday and got to try out a few bikes. I wanted a 1200 L but they didn't have one so I tried the nightster instead. A very peppy machine and was surprised that it rode a bit better then my bike (883 Low). Other then that, it was just about the same.

I also got a chance to try the 883 Super Low and was rather disappointed. I would not give up my bike for it that is for sure. It did have a bigger tank and the center of gravity was better. It wasn't so top heavy. It had bigger foot pegs and the distance between foot peg/shifter and foot peg/brake were further apart. I didn't like it because my feet are small and had to remove my full foot to reach shifter or brake.

I came around a turn and rubbed the pegs and my foot. I was extremely disappointed. I was barely leaning and the bike wouldn't take it. Not like my bike does now.

It did handle the road much better. I find mine feel slight in the front end at high speed but the super low did not. It felt very "grounded".

The last thing I noticed about it that I didn't like was when I put the kick stand down. I always pull my kick stand out and have the quirky habit of leaving my foot pushing on the kickstand while I lean my bike. I guess I do this to make sure the kick stand stays in place. When I did this with the super low it jammed my foot with the peg. I had to lift the bike back up, move my foot and lean it over again.

All in all, I was no impressed with this model at all. I wouldn't waste a penny on it. Just my honest opinion.

Ok, Newbie to the forum.

Been a hang around for sometime now just reading but thought I would join your community. I posted some info about me in the New to Community forum if anybody is interested.

but I seem to be having a problem with a 01 883 Sporty.

CV Carb 3.3 gal tank. 13,000 miles (bought it used with 3,800 miles on it last year. Daily Rider)

This issue started about a week back.
Was on a short ride and the bike started to sputter like it was low on gas.
Pull into a parking lot and it just died. Tried to restart but it acted like it was flooded. Trailered her home and checked the plugs back cylinder was fouled out. Changed the plugs and put a set of new Screaming eagle wires on it.

Rode it for a week to work everyday no issues.

Went on a long ride this weekend with some family, 1,200 miles.
She sputtered once on the way out the after about 500 miles and died.
Pulled to the side of the rode and restarted first hit no problems. Thought I had water in the tank from last fill up.

Stopped in Buds Harley Davidson in Evansville Indiana right about closing time. Explained to the service guys what had been going on. They we nice enough to check the Vaccum lines. everything came back no problems. Stated the same thing. Maybe water in the tanks. Got to where I was going (Fam Reunion) Put a couple ounces of seafoam in the tank pulled cleaned the carb. She ran great all weekend. Was on my was back home Monday about 400 miles into the trip she sputtered and died again. Tried to restart but would not turn over just would crank and crank. Let her sit for about 30 minutes tried and again and turned right over. Went about another 150 miles and she sputter again and died again. This time it was dark so I check for spark and wasn't getting anything off the back plug. Changed plugs anyhow. Check connection on the coil and boom she turned right over. Finally got her home that evening but the last 60 miles or so she was running rough spitting and sputtering and died another time but turn right over after I messed with the coil wires again.

I am thinking maybe a bad coil or I could be losing my ignition module.

Any Thoughts out there on this problem??

1981 Ironhead, Common Faults?

HI
I am very soon buying a 1981 Ironhead and would like to know what inherent problems i might encounter. So far the most information i can get is that the gearbox is made of chocolate and that's all i've been told.
It is my intention to clean the bike up and re-powdercoat the frame, replace steering and swingarm bearings, shocks, chain and sprockets, fork seals etc but i was hoping to get a small amount of use out of it after doing this, before i give the motor to a specialist to rebuild around next Easter - in the meantime, what is likely to fail on a standard Motor ? When it is rebuilt, is there anything i can do to replace the gearbox with one that won't fail?

Also, once the motor has been rebuilt i was going to fit a complete S+S carb kit, some traditional drag pipes and a crane Hi-4 single fire ignition using dyna coils. Has anyone had experience of these parts and do they work well on the sportster? i used these on a shovelhead i had years ago and they worked great but this is the first sportster i have ever owned so really just looking for any advice on what works and what doesnt. I am not looking for performance from this bike, just outright efficiency and reliability. I have been told that the Ironhead is neither of those things but i refuse to accept that it can't be MADE to be reliable and efficient. I dont want an EVO because i like the old style of the Ironhead so anyone's help or advice would be much appreciated.

Andy.

Hey thanks for all the great advice so far. :thumbsup But I have another issue. When I start the bike I always pull in the clutch lever. Just a habit from my old dirt bike days. But when I kick it into gear sometimes I cannot even tell if it shifted and sometimes it shakes the bike so hard I think something is going to break. I always keep it in neutral too. The other problem is getting worse. It gets hung up between gears when downshifting. Whether I am coasting or stopped it just gets hung up in a neutral state, no matter what gear. And the only way to get it to downshift is let the clutch out a little and then downshifting. Not something I like doing when braking. Thanks for the help....

In the rain,,,
On the Superslab,,
an surface roads,,,
I was doin 75 on the Slab,,backed off to 65, bike felt planted
an the water in the tire tracks did nothing.
I felt safer in that than up on the greasy center of the lanes.
Took It back to 70,,Moderate rain, had good brake control, no probs
On the Surface roads,,Dammit Man !!! they were slick as a babies ass.
Traction changed often,,did alot of checking with the rear brake,,
Didn't like that,,,I survived.
OK OK I'll admit It,, I was scared to lean while turning through Intersections..
Monk an Hammer would pull away from me a few bike lengths..
Those paint lines,,they rolled over them like they wern't there..

Question,,Am I a wuss? Or just need more rain experience,,,
It's been over 20 years an my Goldwing was alot heavier.
I don't remember how much leaning I could do On It,,way back then,,,,
