My new 2009 Dyna has a cool feature that is displayed on the speedometer/odometer/multi-data display. When you scroll to where displays a lower case "r", it tells you how many miles you can ride until you will run out of gasoline. It seems to be very accurate, but I can't figure out exactly how it gathers its data and calculates the remaining miles.

My SUV has a similar display along with a current MPG display. The SUV appears to calculate the remaining miles based on the MPG that it displays and how much gas is left in the tank.

Does the Harley system work the same way or does it just take the amount of gas that it measures with the fuel gauge and multiply that by a fixed MPG figure? It appears that it is actually calculating the MPG, but not displaying it, then using the data from the fuel gauge to calculate the remaining miles you can run before you are out of gas.

Does anyone know how it actually works?

I have a 2009 Dyna Super Glide that i bought about a month ago. The first thing that I did was install a D&D Fat Cat 2-into-1 exhaust. Then I put on an Arlen Ness Big Sucker intake under the stock FXD intake cover with a Vance & Hines Fuel Pak.

I took the first real ride last Sunday since the Fuel Pak was installed. The bike ran good, but it sounded like a Mack truck with a Jake Brake whenever I would use the engine to compression brake down the mountain roads. It did the same, but to a lesser degree whenever I would close the throttle with the clutch engaged. After a while the sound became obnoxious.

An email to Dave at Vance and Hines received a quick reply with a modification to the original map. After getting the new map installed today I went for a 70 mile loop. The Jake Brake sound was gone and so was I. The increase in power from the original map (which V&H had created by extrapolating their experience with the Fat Cat on other Harleys instead of a dyno test on a SG) was very noticeable, in fact it was profound.

Low end torque is great, mid range is too, and top end is almost scary. It feels a bit like a 2-cycle engine with an expansion chamber coming "on the pipe" but with a very wide power band and not as hard of a kick.

So I took the SD to the local Texaco station and very precisely filled it up, just to were the gas stared to exit the overflow. Then I went for ride. The speeds ranged from 20 mph in Stanley to 65 mph on a limited access highway, with plenty of 35 mph and 45 mph segments. I wasn't flogging the throttle, but I wasn't riding like grandpa either.

I finished the loop at the same gas station, at the same gas pump, where I very carefully filled the tank to the top again. The I calculated the gas mileage. I was expecting to lose 7 mpg or so. The SG with the new map got 53.25 mpg. That is about 1.5 mpg less than I have been getting with my 2008 XL883.

When the bike was stock and even after the new exhaust, intake, and Fuel Pak with the first map, it was averaging 46.5 mpg. That is an increase of 6.75 mpg with a lot more power and an engine that is running much cooler.

Leo, at Open Road Cycles, where the intake and Fuel Pak were purchased, said that the same V&H Fuel Pak on his Softail upped his mileage by 7 mpg with a lot more power too. The real kicker is that when I got home and let the bike cool down, the tire pressures were 3 pounds low in each tire. On the Sportster, 3 pounds low will cost me about 1 to 1.5 mpg.

Another factor to consider is that when I filled up the SG after the new map, it was 3/4 full of gas that had ethanol in it. On the XL, gas/ethanol mixes cost me around 1.5 to 2.5 mpg. That is simply because ethanol has fewer btu's per gallon than gasoline.

Gas mileage translates into range, and when you are trying to spread out gas stops, more mpg's are not a bad thing. Last year during the gasoline shortage, I had to very carefully plan my ride. If I could not find gas within a safe margin of the half way point, I had to turn back. 6.75 mpg times 4.8 gallons is 32.4 more miles on a tank of gas. I like it!

Needless to say, I'm pretty happy with the bike and its current mods. I don't plan to do anything more to the engine, unless it is running too warm come next summer and I decide to install an oil cooler.

Yesterday...I got the V&H Straightshots, V&H Fuelpak, and Screamin' Eagle Stage I AC installed on the 2009 FXDC. Those Straightshots look and sound GREAT which is exactly what I was looking for! Now for the bad news...

1. Torque is down...especially in 6th gear at low rpm.
2. Engine vibration is UP across the RPM range! Really seems to run kinda' ROUGH actually..
3. Increased performance is....WHERE?

Any thoughts?

At any rate...I'm gonna take it back to the dealer and see what can be done...otherwise I'm returning it to stock and leave it at that. All this just to have better sounding pipes! Me thinks the carb engines are MUCH more user friendly to mods than the EFI ones!:( I should've left well enough alone...

Just bought some V & A Straightshot slip-on's from USA. No baffles were supplied with the pipes so I'm reluctant to fit them. Has anyone got these pipes fitted and if so what do they sound like with or without baffles compared to the stock silencers? Also any ideas how to remove the stock silencers. I undid all the bolts etc but couldn't slide them more than 1/3 an inch. They're stuck fast.
Traveled several 500+ mile days on the Sportster. Is the Dyna a softer ride than the Sportster?
I don't think the Sportster will handle auxiliary driving lights. Will the charging system on the Dyna handle driving lights and heated clothing.
Retiring in 10 months and will have lots of time to ride
Thanks for your input.

With 1500 miles on my new Dyna Custom, I added V&H slip-on pipes, a "big sucker" air cleaner, and a Power Commander V. I had Sanger Cycles in Fort Collins preform the DYNO tune and went from 60.26 HP and 79.42 ft-lbs of torque (Stock Bike) to 70.65 HP and 79.42 ft-lbs of torque with the upgrade. And it sounds great! I live at 5000' elevation so I would expect a bit more at sea level.
